  3. Step 1: Determine AONGRC Interest Polled the members; response was positive Proceed with research plan, but first Needed a strategy to determine level of industry interest, if any

  4. Step 2: Host a Utica Shale Workshop Taking a Deeper Look: Geology & Potential of the Upper Ordovician Utica Shale June 21, 2011; New Philadelphia, OH Unexpectedly high interest; more than 250 pre-registered Needed to move to another room; turn some away

  5. Step 3: Write a Research Plan Began immediately after June workshop All participated, but Taury Smith and the OGS led the way 9 tasks, multiple subtasks; designated team leads Completed in time to prepare for next step

  6. Step 4: Stakeholders Meeting By invitation only, September 13, NRCCE Used the registration list from June, plus companies who already were active Invited 30 companies; 40 individuals from 17, plus 9 research team organizations Research plan in a.m., membership agreement and fee followed free lunch

  7. Step 5: Creating the Utica Shale Research consortium Modified the research plan, incorporating input from Stakeholders Wrote a membership agreement; fee based on total estimated cost and confirmed membership by given date Distributed to potential partners; received and incorporated numerous comments Final document by April 12 signed by all
