  2. What Are Subject Headings? Subject Headings are a method for libraries to organize similar information into groups . Libraries choose ONE word or phrase to categorize similar concepts For example, a search for: World War II World War 2 World War two will be gathered under a single Subject Heading: World War, 1939-1945 Remember: Keyword searches find only those exact words you have entered, but you might miss things. But, if you look at a official heading and search it, it brings everything together.

  3. Where Do You Find Them? Library subject headings are used in individual records. When you find an item (article, book, ebook, etc.) and click on the title -- you bring up the record! Scroll down and you ll see the Subject Headings listed for that item. Subject Heading: World War, 1939-1945

  4. How Can You Use Them? Now that I ve found the subject headings, what do I do with them? Subject headings are usually clickable or hyperlinked! Click to see what else is available with that subject heading by clicking on the name and looking through the results page. Write them down! You can also make a note of specific subject headings and use them in other searches Do a "Browse Search"! Browse through all the sub-headings that are related to the main subject heading. Learn how on the next slide!

  5. Browse Search A subject "Browse Search" will give you an alphabetical listing of subject headings and it will also reveal subheadings.   6. Browse Search Next, click on the Browse By button in the search bar, and use the drop-down menu to find Subject. In the search box, use the subject headings you ve previously found (World War, 1939-1945) to browse all the items in this subject.

  7. Sub-Headings By browsing based on the subject heading (World War, 1939-1945) you can also look through all the sub-headings ! Notice the sub-headings that bring out more information about the topic. Click on any headings that seem useful, and it will take you to the items! There are arrows at the bottom left of the page, where you can move backward or forward, alphabetically, to see a much larger list.
