Verbs that are not used in the continuous form Some verbs are not used in the continuous form since they refer to states rather than actions or processes, as such they are used in the present simple. verbs of senses/perception (see, hear, smell, taste) I see a rat in the grass. Or I can see a rat in the grass But not I am seeing a rat in the grass. Verbs that are not used in the continuous form
verbs that refer to opinions and mental states realise, remember, understand, mean, I believe in God not I am believing in God. such as, forget, imagine, know, Verbs of emotions and desires such as, like, hope, envy, regret, need, wish, . She loves her cat not she is loving her cat.
Verbs contain, cost, hold, measure, weigh and verbs that indicate possession such as, own, belong, have, . that indicate measurement, like: The room contains 100 students. Not is containing
Think Think When it means (believe), it cannot be used in the continuous form. I think you are smart. I believe .. When think means using mental ability to take a decision, it can be used in the continuous form. I am thinking of resigning.
Have When it means possess or contain, it cannot be used in the continuous form, otherwise it can be used in the continuous from. I am having dinner with a friend. But I have a car not I am having a car. Look and feel They can be used in both the present simple and the present continuous. I feel tired now. I am feeling tired now.
See When it means meet, it can be used in the continuous form. I am seeing an old friend today.
am subject is being are This structure is used to say how somebody is acting or behaving temporarily. This form is used only with actions and behaviours not with feeling.
He is generous. [he always behaves generously. He is a generous person] He is being generous. [ he is not a generous person, but this time he behaves generously]
