  3. Using the two maps of Europe and your own knowledge from lessons with your French teacher, discuss a) the state of Europe in 1810 and b) what challenges the major European powers face in 1814/15. Discuss in pairs for 3 mins.

  4. State of Europe in 1814/15: Look at the following points. Explain the points in pairs using your own knowledge, would you add anything else? Chaos and fear of revolution spread across Europe and much of the world France conquered territory as far east as Moscow The Holy Roman Empire is abolished. Great Britain, Austria, Prussia, Russia and France suffered economic and human loss as a result of years of war. Feelings of nationalism spread across Europe Partnerships and alliances emerged between different European countries Prussia and Russia grew ambitious, wanting more territories.

  5. Task research to take part in a Congress of Vienna simulation You are going to take on the role of one of the Big Five representatives at the Vienna Congress. Your teacher will give you an info sheet on ONE country listed below: France Marquis de Talleyrand Britain Viscount Castlereagh Austria Prince Metternich Prussia King Frederick William III represented by Prince Hardenberg Russia Alexander I Here is the link to the information worksheets: https://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/cms/lib/GA01000549/Centricity/Domai n/1325/CoVBackgroundInformation-.pdf

  6. Task continued: You will first work in groups of X, each group taking on the role of ONE country. You are preparing for the Congress. In this small group you will discuss what you want to achieve at this conference for YOUR country, what you want the map of Europe to look like and how you are going to achieve it. You can supplement this with additional reading at home. Here is a worksheet to complete as you work in a group to help you formulate your position. Walk around the class and see if you can find allies, any one who shares the same concerns and aims as you. What can you agree on? What do you disagree on? How can you work together when you are in congress ?

  7. The Congress You are now going to be groups of the five nations at the Congress of Vienna where you will debate in role how the new post Napoleonic Europe should look. You will have to clearly explain your view, work with the allies you have identified, try to lessen potential problems that you see and eventually come to a decision. Draw as a group the map of the new Europe. Now look at what was really agreed at Vienna. How does this differ from your choices?

  8. Final activity Working in pairs, from your reading summarise the main principles or beliefs by which the representatives at the Vienna Congress based their decision making. The main powers believed that: The victors were entitled to rewards no obligation to consult the wishes of the people in territorial arrangements there needed to be a balance of power in Europe They needed to keep a watch on France Future wars need to be avoided legitimate rulers should be restored to the land and thrones lost
