Categories of Visa Sponsorship for UGA postdocs J-1 categories: Student Student Intern Professor Specialist Research Scholar Short-term Scholar H-1B temporary worker E-3 (Australian nationals); TN (Canadian or Mexican nationals); O-1 Permanent residency ONLY if you are promoted to a permanent research or teaching position .

U.S. Permanent Residency (aka: green card ) 5 Eligibility: Permanent or tenure track full time hire Position must require at least a Bachelor s degree Hiring department must agree to cover the costs Bad news: Post-doctoral positions are considered temporary training positions, and so the U.S. government will not allow an employment-based sponsorship for these positions Post-docs can explore two categories of self-petitioin for a green card National Interest Waiver EB-1a Alien of Extraordinary Ability
EB-1a Alien of Extraordinary Ability 6 Must show proof of one-time significant achievement (like a Nobel prize), or evidence in at least 3 categories of evidence: National or international prizes or awards Membership in selective organizations Media attention to you and your work Judge the work of others (editorial or peer reviews) Original scientific or scholarly contributions Authorship of peer reviewed publications or books Artistic or scholarly showcase of your work Holding a critical role at a distinguished organization Commercial success in the performing arts High salary
National Interest Waiver (NIW) 7 Most PR sponsorships have to receive approval from the Dept. of Labor. NIW allows you to avoid this. Self-petition no employer needed Work must be in the interest of the United States must be seen to be of benefit to the country Must meet at least 3 criteria: Degree relating to ability Letters documenting at least 10 years experience License to practice, if applicable High salary reflecting your exceptional ability Professional memberships Public recognition of your work Other evidence

Working toward a U.S. green card Develop your cv: 9 Publications, presentations, international talks, peer reviewing, grant funding, media attention Look for permanent employment (Assistant Research Scientist, Research Professional, Lab Manager....) Married? Compare spouse qualifications and experience perhaps he or she is more easily sponsored... Be patient process can take YEARS Consult with a good immigration attorney to review options. DO NOT always believe what your friends tell you!
