Food Security - Policy Context Achievements/Highlights Pacific leaders called for action to improve food security in the Pacific as part of the Pacific Plan for strengthening regional cooperation & integration; Framework for Action on Food Security endorsed at the 2010 Food Summit and Pacific Leaders in 2010; FSPWG established pre and post Summit; 3

  4. Food Security Policy Context Achievements/Highlights 1. 2. Leadership and Coordination Regulatory frameworks, enforcement and compliance and public private sector collaboration Enhanced and sustainable production, processing and trading of safe and nutritious local food Protect infants and vulnerable groups Consumer empowerment and mobilizing partners 6. Food security information systems 7. Enhanced land tenure systems and land-use policies, energy, transport, education and communication systems to underpin food security 3. 4. 5. 4

Food Security Policy Context Summit commitments Action at the Regional Level: - provide leadership and coordination role - supporting members in developing and implementing national plans Action at a national level: - developing and strengthening national implementation plans; - strengthening a multi-sectoral approach to national food security policy; - identifying national champions for food security. 5

  8. Food Security - Policy Context Major challenges: - Implementation requires resources; - Advocacy and communication to raise awareness - Food security interventions guided by sector specific and information 8

Food Security - Policy Context Major challenges specific to FS indicators: -Data available but not known where it is stored or parked; -HR capacity for data analysis as no one govt ministry will hold all the data; -Lack of ICT infrastructure/data collection and analysis; -Issue of dated legislation at country level, where data sharing on one hand and on the other hand confidentiality/privacy; -New ways of looking at data legislation and exploring the idea of integrating data from different agencies/sectors and how agencies work towards this -Need for population data - Lack of M and E 9

  11. Food Security - Policy Context How do we see activities progress in the future? Regional collaboration is essential, WHO, FAO, USP; UNICEF and others on the collection; storage; processing; analysis and dissemination of information; Formalise general consensus in the FSPWG for SPC to lead the regional design work on food security indicators; There must be country ownership and genuine commitment to complement effective regional collaboration and leadership 11
