Ways of Reporting Speech
There are two ways to relate what a person said: Direct Speech where the exact words are repeated, and Indirect Speech where the words are reported. Learn how to change reported speech from direct to indirect by adjusting pronouns, time expressions, and verb tenses with helpful examples.

Reported Speech There are two ways of relating what a person had said :
We report the original speaker s exact words Direct Speech He said I have lost my umbrella
We report what other said Indirect speech He said that he had lost his umbrella.
Steps of changing the reported speech from direct to indirect 1. Change the pronouns
Pronouns change She said , she is coming this week She said that she was coming that week. She said that she was ill. I am ill , she said.
Pronouns change He said , my son is smart . He said that his son was smart
2. Expressions of time and place change
Expressions of time and place change That day today The day before Yesterday The day before yesterday Two days before The next day Tomorrow
Expressions of time and place change A day after tomorrow In two day s time The following week Next week The previous week Last week
Expressions of time and place change I will do it tomorrow he promised. He promised that he would do it the next day.
Tense changes He said that he never ate meat. I never eat meat he said. Simple past Simple present
Tense changes He said that he was waiting for Ann. I m waiting for Ann he said. Past Present continuous continuous
Tense changes He said that he had found a flat. I have found a flat , he said Past perfect Present prefect
Tense change He said, "I have been waiting for ages He said that he had been waiting for ages. Past perfect continuous Present perfect continuous
