  1. Web Designer: Elements of Design Good Morning and thank you for inviting me in to your classroom today My name is Kelley Cole and I am Web Designer

  2. Web Designer: Elements of Design Windows 95 was the big OS back then, we were a big HP-UX shop at Lockheed Martin and Linux was barely a thing. I began by viewing the page source of web sites via Netscape 1.0 web browser. I would compare the source code to the page and then began developing my own. Remember there were no courses yet . No degree programs...or books...oh and no fancy WYSIWYG editors or CMS systems like SharePoint, GitHub no Drupal or WordPress. Everything was via vi or notepad. Around 1997 a coworker took notice of what I was doing and recommended me to his manager and I began working on the frontend and backend of one of the first Integrated Data Environments (Content Management System) I stayed there until 2000 when I took the role of Web Specialist for Jevic Transportation. This would last about a year and a half where I would find myself back at Lockheed Martin from 2001 until 2013. Here I would expand my skills as a technical writer, human factors engineering where I would learn much of the principles involved in user experience (UX) / User Interface (UI) design oh and I would redesign AirMichelin.com for Michelin Tires. From 2014 thru October 2015 would see me using primarily Sharepoint as a CMS for both PECO Energy and then Hill International where we also used WordPress. 2016 thru July of this year I was Web Services Architect for Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine www.pcom.edu My diverse interests and background afforded me the opportunity that I am not the typical Web Designer I can build out the entire stack from the operating system and the backend to the CMS such as Subrion or WordPress the design and build the web site. I get great satisfaction that no two days are ever the same. I love being able to take a blank site and develop a web site or web app and see the customer's face light up when it is what they envisioned.

  3. Web Designer: Elements of Design Typical job description goes like this - A web designer creates the look, layout, and features of a website. The job involves understanding both graphic design and computer programming. Once a website is created, a designer helps with maintenance and additions to the website. They work with development teams or managers for keeping the site up-to-date and prioritizing needs, among other tasks. More often then not Marketing and Communications to ensure consistent message and branding also to ensure SEO rankings. Then there is Legal and Compliance to ensure accessibility and legal / privacy compliance is met.

  6. Web Designer: Elements of Design Design principles to follow Less is more by this I mean try to get the message across in as few words as possible. Most visitors scan to find what they are looking for. You have at best about 3 to 5 seconds to start painting your picture before visitor is bored and gone. Keep relevant info above the fold this means above the scrolling or in view. Page speed Google is fickle about pagespeed there are browser plugins and extensions 5 finger 3 finger rules of navigation this is simplicity at its best and most efficient. 5 fingers is for navigation / menu groupings of five no more than 10 and fingers of 3 is to kep no information further from a visitor than 3 clicks of the mouse.
