WEEK 2: Identifying an Appropriate Journal Goals 1. Discussion of Journal Readings 2. What is appropriate ? 3. Begin article structure
Discussion Common Themes Beall s list is long Lots of names sound official, or similar to legit journals Questions Why do predatory journals exist? What happens if you accidentally publish in a predatory journal? How do you pick a journal?
Lecture: Legitimate Publishers Will Assign DOIs (digital object identifiers) Inform authors of ALL fees up front Offer fee waivers without penalty (Julie and COPE!) Submission fees should make you wary! (Julie s advice) How does publisher make money? Have a legitimate review process Named editor, board members Detail how review occurs Have ethics statements Plagiarism Conflict of interest
Lecture: Choose Wisely COPE: Committee on Publication Ethics Promotes ethical practices in publishing Good publishers should be members of COPE 16 simple criteria for membership https://publicationethics.org/ Directory of Open Access Journals https://doaj.org/ THINK CHECK SUBMIT https://thinkchecksubmit.org/
Activity 1: Think, Check, Submit Groups of TWO Pick THREE journal titles Use THINK part of https://thinkchecksubmit.org/ Rate each journal article THUMBS UP: Probably okay THUMBS SHRUG: Maybe? THUMBS DOWN: Probably not okay
Activity 1 Regroup WHOLE CLASS Thumbs Up What about journal was up? Big publisher (EXCEPT: fees, difficult to contact), shiny website (not always), peer-review process clear, academic presses / legit professional society, Editorial Board knows they are on board Thumbs Shrug What about journal was shrug? Book publisher, email papers instead of website, seems to be association is legit? Thumbs Down What about journal was down? Editorial Board DOESN T know they are on board, Spammy website (not shiny) links don t really work correctly, Auto downloads, Who is publisher, anyway?, Book publisher that looks like a journal FEES: $150-$5000, $400, none. Discipline dependent?
Lecture: So You Picked a Journal Plan, Plan, Plan Make an outline NOT RELATED TO YOUR SPECIFIC CONTENT Breaking down a journal article (x3) What sections does the article contain? How many paragraphs per section? What is the overall point of each paragraph? Break each one down to the sentence level if needed! What figures and tables are included? How do these relate to the text?
Lecture: Breaking down an article Be non-specific! A study of carbon-14 might contain a paragraph about carbon isotopes. A study of Helium-3 might contain a paragraph about helium isotopes. A study of breastfeeding might contain a paragraph about child feeding practices. What do the above have in common? ???
Activity 2: So You Picked a Journal I have chosen two articles from the same journal. In groups of 4: BUILD AN OUTLINE!!! What sections does the article contain? How many paragraphs per section? What is the overall point of each paragraph? Break down ONE paragraph What figures and tables are included? How do these relate to the text? TAKE NOTES IN ONLINE SPACE IF POSSIBLE (We are going to break up groups)
Reform groups. How are outlines similar? Order of sections, start with big problem, number of references, abstracts short, font size in figures!!!! Similar, lot of figures. How are outlines different? Results/disc together or apart, methods within and appendix vs. methods in appendix, Results and disc sep: 10 paragraphs + 10; combined: 10; 7 figs vs. 4 figs For outlines you didn t create: Are there details that are too specific to the article? What would you use instead?
Regroup WHOLE CLASS Put it all together: What did you learn about outlining? Brainstorm how this process will work best for you. Collaborate? Alone? How many articles?
