Westbury Medical Centre PPG Meeting Highlights
The Westbury Medical Centre PPG meeting reviewed the new NHS Pharmacy First scheme allowing pharmacies to supply prescription-only medicines for common health conditions. The service includes treatment for sinusitis, sore throat, earache, impetigo, shingles, and more. Appointments and access to healthcare services, including online consultations and patient call backs, were also discussed to improve patient engagement and reduce missed appointments. Strategies to reduce DNA rates and enhance service visibility were explored during the meeting.

Westbury Medical Centre PPG Meeting 25.4.24
Pharmacy First January saw the beginning of a new NHS scheme called Pharmacy First This gives pharmacies the ability to supply prescription only medicines, including antibiotics where appropriate to treat seven common health conditions such as: Sinusitis Sore throat (age 5+) Earache (age 1+) Infected insect bites (age 1+) Impetigo (age 1+) (age 12+) Shingles (age 18+) Urine infections in women (age 16+) This service can be accessed via different routes. Patients can walk into the pharmacy or referrals can be made by the GP practice, NHS111, 999, Urgent Treatment centres or A&E departments.
Appointments and Access On the average month we are offering 2,200 appointments for patients to book into. Out of these appointments, 30% are kept aside for on the day appointments and are released at 8am each day. Appointments are available to book in person, on the phone or by patient online access. Appointments can be booked up to 8 weeks in advance. In the last month we had 176 patients who booked an appointment but did not attend. The practice sends patients 2 reminders for their appointments. Any ideas of how we could reduce the DNA rates?
Appointments and Access We are aware that our phones have been busier than usual recently, but this is due to the review messages being sent out to patients and patients contacting the practice regarding appointment reviews or blood tests. We implemented the facility for patient call backs last year. Do you feel this is working? Patients can submit an online consultation to the practice to request sick notes or medical problems requiring an appointment with a clinician. Do you think this service is advertised enough or should it be highlighted further?
