Often times, when people are dealing with setbacks and struggles, they tend to blame God. Why me? Some might see our present circumstance as the judgment of God, or possibly an end time warning. So how do answer these things?
First, I do NOT have all the answers. Nor does anyone else! God no longer communicates directly through prophets, but through His word Within its pages I believe we can find some understanding and guidance to help us deal with these questions. (2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:3)
Who is God? To answer this our question, we must first determine who God is.
Who is God? God is all powerful (omnipotent) Almighty! Mark 10:27, Jeremiah 32:17 there is nothing too hard for You Job 42:2 I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You God has declared His power creation, miracles, prophesies, etc. He is in control! (cf. 1 John 4:4)
Who is God? God is everywhere (omnipresent) You cannot hide from Him Psalm 139:7-11 Where can I go from Your Spirit?... Jeremiah 23:23-24 Am I a God near at hand, says the Lord, And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him? says the Lord; Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord. He sees all comfort or fear?
Who is God? God is all knowing (omniscient) He is wise and all understanding. He knows us everything! Our innermost thoughts, motives; our hearts; What is best in a given circumstance; What we really need? Etc. He also knows how this world works He knows the outcome of what will happen and can act accordingly.
Who is God? God is all knowing (omniscient) His word testifies to this Romans 11:33-36 His ways are unsearchable, deeper than ours. 1 Corinthians 2:16, Who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him? In this we have confidence that He knows what He is doing!
Who is God? God is loving and gracious He cares about us. He understands. His rule, while righteous and just, is tempered with love, grace, mercy and patience. His is good. 1 Peter 5:7 Romans 5:8 Ephesians 2:4-6 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Romans 2:4
Who is God? God is loving and gracious This is the God I serve and believe in. He is the one TRUE God. This is a quality that sets Him apart from other so-called deities. Don t forget this whenever you consider what is going one and seek answers!
Who is God? God is sovereign We are His creation. He has the right to rule however He chooses. We must abide by HIS rules That can be a terrifying thing, IF it were not for His love, mercy and grace! We know He cares and He deserves our honor, trust and consideration
Some thoughts More directly, is God the cause of what is happening right now? My answer I do not know! (More on this in our lesson this evening) But for now, let us consider some general thoughts about God and suffering
Some thoughts This discussion does NOT prove the existence of God Man sometimes denies God based upon the suffering that takes place in this world. But whether or not God allows suffering has nothing to do with His existence. However, it does reflect on WHO He is
Some thoughts Is God the cause of ALL suffering? No! Much, if not most, suffering is the result of sinful and bad behaviors and decisions.
Some thoughts Is God the cause of ALL suffering? How many live miserable lives because of ungodly decisions, either their own or someone else s poor choices? Crime, much poverty, addictions, immoral behaviors and attitudes, materialism, civil unrest, violating natural laws (e.g. gravity, sanitary laws), personal neglect, and other bad decisions often result in suffering.
Some thoughts Is God the cause of ALL suffering? And then when disaster strikes, how many blame God, when He is not the culprit?
Some thoughts Is God the cause of ALL suffering? Consider also freewill. God made us creatures with the ability to choose. From Adam and Eve, and on we have had the ability to make our own choices. We choose our destiny, and very often our quality of life. Very often man chooses poorly, and it causes suffering on himself, or others, or even an entire society or generation. We generations reject God there are consequences!
Some thoughts Put the blame where it belongs! Satan. He tempted Eve and Adam (Genesis 3). He introduced sin, lies, rebellion against God, etc. The world is his dominion 2 Corinthians 4:4 (the god of this age); John 8:44 (father of lies and murder); 1 John 5:19 the world lies under His sway. 1 Peter 5:8 he seeks to devour you
Some thoughts Put the blame where it belongs! Satan does not care about what is best for you. He is God s enemy and yours! He is the one we should be indignant toward! He is the enemy we should declare war against! He is the reason there is so much suffering
Some thoughts Put the blame where it belongs! Take responsibility for your own actions! How often is suffering the product of our own doing? Cf. 1 Peter 4:15
Some thoughts Be careful before questioning God! Even if you don t understand something, do not forget this! Isaiah 55:8-9 His thoughts and ways are better Romans 9:19-21 Who are you to reply against God?
Some thoughts Be careful before questioning God! There are questions I cannot answer, but there are also answers that I cannot question! Thought: Are we consistent? Do we blame God for the suffering, but take credit ourselves for the good (cf. Job 2:10)
Some thoughts Finally, God does allow suffering! We cannot deny this. The question is why? And is He just in this? And if we don t understand, does that make Him unjust? NO! Based on His character, we can accept that He is just and whatever happens has a reason. Can good come from suffering? That is what our next lesson is about!
God does care! He designed this world and our existence so that good can come from troubles! Will you trust Him?
