Foundations 10: Why is It so Hard to Face the Truth? FOUNDATIONS OF CHRITIAN SPIRITUALITY
1. Change is difficult. 2. Immediate pleasure/gratification seems the easier path to take. (Hedonist) 3. The easier path actually ends up being harder to walk. Dr. Chris Hall, Foundations 10: Why is it so Hard to Face the Truth (video)
Put first things first and we get second things thrown in: put second things first & we lose both first and second things. We never get, say, even the sensual pleasure of food at its best when we are being greedy. The Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis, Vol. III, Narnia, Cambridge and Joy, 1950-1963, edited by Walter Hooper, HarperSanFrancisco, 2007, p. 111.
Jeremiah 17:5-10 5 This is what the Lord says: Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.
Jeremiah 17:5-10 7 But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. 8 They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.
Jeremiah 17:5-10 9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.
Why is it so Hard to Face the Truth?(John 4:1-10)
John 4:1-3 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3 So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
John 4:4-6 4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6Jacob s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
John 4:7-9 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, Will you give me a drink? 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink? (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
John 4:10 10 Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.
John 4:28-30 28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah? 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
