  1. Scholarships 101 CRHS Class of 2021

  2. Types of Financial Aid Scholarships Awarded usually based on achievement/merit that does not need to be repaid. Grants Financial aid that doesn t have to be repaid (unless, for example, you withdraw from school and owe a refund). Loans borrowed money for college or career school; you must repay your loans, with interest. Work Study A work program through which you earn money to help you pay for school.

  3. You cant win if you dont apply! To win more, apply to more. It s a numbers game and involves a bit of luck. Don t miss deadlines. It gets easier after a few applications. Get organized! Checklists and calendars are helpful. Strategies for Winning Scholarships

  4. Essay Writing Tips Use Google Docs or Microsoft Word to write your essay. Why should I use Word to write my essay? Save your work. Come back to your essay later. Use as a starting point for another scholarship application. Online applications can time out = losing your essay. Cut essay from Google Doc or Word and paste into the application. Personalize the essay to each scholarship. Follow directions. Is there a word limit? Tip: Do not go over the word limit. Answer the question(s). Does your essay answer the question being asked of you? Connect with the reader. Tell your story. Answer the question(s) with your story. Tip: Do not introduce yourself in the essay. (i.e. My name is ) Proofread and spell check your essay!

  5. Letters of Recommendation Ask early! Give the teacher or other recommender plenty of time to write your letter (at least two weeks in advance.) Provide details about the scholarship. Why are you applying to this scholarship? Give the recommender all required forms. Give them a resume or Senior Brag Sheet This provides more information about you and your accomplishments. Thank them! Make sure you take the time to thank the recommender. Gratitude goes a long way!

  6. If you have to pay money to get money, it s probably a scam. No one should be giving you a guarantee that you will win the scholarship. DO NOT give out personal information, such as social security number or bank account information. Beware of Scams!!

  7. Common Scholarship Application Mistakes Applying for an award when you don t qualify. Missing a deadline. Omitting required information. Not following directions - number and types of letters of recommendation, essay length, official or unofficial transcript. Sending in an application without proofreading. Writing in pencil or crazy colored pen.

  8. Additional Scholarship Tips Use a professional email. Example:firstname.lastname@gmail.com Clean up your social media. When you google your name, what comes up? Is this what you want colleges and scholarship committees to see? Make a copy of your application before sending it. Type the application or write in blue or black ink. Organization is key to not missing deadlines! Deadlines - pay attention to postmark or receive by dates. Plan to apply to one scholarship per week.

  9. Dont forget to say Thanks! When you receive a scholarship, make sure to send a thank you card to the organization!
