SYMET-14 and CDP WMO Symposiums on Education and Training (SYMET) is organized once every four years to assist the international community understand emerging meteorologic al and hydrological education needs and training challenges; and those that are foreseen to arise over the next five to ten years. A major outcome of SYMET-14 that took place in November 2021 revolves around the need to focus on competency-based training. The EC Capacity Development Panel (CDP) also recommended that a focus on competency implementation . The Capacity Development Strategy recognizes the growing deficit in the capability and numbers of adequately educated and trained staff needed to provide weather, climate, water and related environmental services in many countries and territories.
Hence the draft Resolution 4.4(2)/1 (Cg19) The importance of Education and Training was reiterated in Resolution 71 (Cg-18), which inter alia decided that the ETRP should be directed toward developing qualified and competent National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) staff. The Executive Council (EC) Capacity Development Panel (CDP) made recommendations on key activities that would put the Education and Training Programme in a good position to respond to the needs of Members. The Draft Resolution 4.4(2)/1 (Cg-19) highlights the key programmatic actions required to achieve the objectives of the programme. INF. 4.4(2) throws some light on the WMO education and training activities during the current financial period.
