  2. What is World Food Day? World Food Day is celebrated on the16th October Its aim is to raise awareness and bring about action dedicated to tackling world hunger In Ireland it is championed by NGO s such as Concern and Self Help Africa

  3. Hunger: people lack enough nutrients to live fully active and healthy lifestyles, it can be both short and long term Malnutrition: not getting enough food or the right kind of foods for your body to stay healthy Food insecurity: the uncertainty around the availability of and access to safe food due to factors such as famine, war or poverty Development assistance: is also know as Aid, all types of help given from one person or country to another NGO s: Non-governmental organizations are voluntary groups that raise money from the public and give it to projects to help people in the developing world For further information: https://developmenteducation.ie/feature/future/

  10. Factors causing world hunger defined Poverty: this leads to underdevelopment of areas as people are unable to afford to feed themselves and their families. Often the food they eat is of poor quality and leads to lack of energy and therefore the inability to work Disease and illness: Hungry and malnourished people are weak and can pick up diseases easily. Factors causing world hunger defined Famines and other climatic factors: Food security in developing world countries with basic resources is undertreat from famines, drought, extremes in climate and natural disasters War and conflict: Since 1992 food crisis caused wars and conflicts has risen from 15% to 35%.   14. Development assistance and its impacts on hunger Development assistance is the official name for aid Aid is support or help given by richer countries to poorer countries of the world. It can come in many forms such as financial assistance, technical assistance, food or medical supplies Sources of aid can be governmental (1) Bilateral aid which is given from one country to another e.g. Irish Aid. (2) Multilateral which is given by governments to international bodies such as the United Nations or UN Non-governmental Aid is largely voluntary and provided by the public through organizations such as Concern and Self Help Africa

The role of NGO s in the battle against world hunger The work of NGO s has changed in recent years from the direct provision of services to actively looking for governmental support or at local community level to help build on local skills and resources NGO s use the knowledge they have learned from working with poor communities to argue for national and international policy change to deal with the structural aspects of poverty and hunger These changes must be based on sustainable developments in these vulnerable areas
