THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSTITUTION The Constitution of Japan came into effect on May 3, 1947. In commemoration of this event, the day was designated as a national holiday.There are many speeches about the role of the Constitution during the 1960s and the Parliament building remains open to visitors who have the opportunity to have their photo taken in front of the building and walk through the chambers which are usually closed to ordinary citizens.Under the current constitution that replaced the Meiji Constitution, the sovereignty of the people is proclaimed and war is renounced. The emperor is the symbol of the country and the unity of the people and has no power related to the government. Japan
