  1. Understanding Worship Together John 4:19-24

  2. In Spirit and in Truth--Praying The Text John 4:19-24 19 The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship." 21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

  3. In Spirit and in Truth--Praying Looking at the Text John 4:19-24 The woman realizes there is a messenger from God talking to her Her question was: Since there only one way to worship, which is right? Her two sources for truth: (1) Traditions handed down (2) Others practices Now she realizes there is a higher source a messenger from God Diversity and changes in worship in America comes from the same two sources The Messenger gives the answer to her & to us as to how worship MUST be done The right object The FATHER; right method TRUTH; right place SPIRIT/SOUL

  4. In Spirit and in Truth--Praying Worshiping in Spirit and in Truth Worship in the New Testament church The Greek word for worship, proskeneo, involves acts it is defined an act of homage paid to deity All of life is service, but there are specific acts of worship (Matt. 4:10) Five acts of worship in the New Testament church - Praying together - Communing together in the Lord s Supper - Giving together in the fellowship of supporting His work - Singing together, praising Him and speaking to each other - Preaching, being taught together the words of God for our daily lives Our focus today is not private times of worship, but worshiping as the church (Greek word for church is ekklesia, His called out body), which is called together to worship

  5. Worshiping in Spirit and in Truth In Spirit and in Truth--Praying Praying in Truth Jesus shows prayers to be address to the Father Prayer (and all of life) must be in Jesus name John 16:23-24; Col. 3:17 Prayer must come from a heart of faith James 1:6 Prayer must come from a life of righteousness James 5:16 Prayer according to His will His will is to answer you! 1 John 5:14 Must know His will (from the Bible) to pray according to His will Praying in Your Spirit/Soul Talking to God with one leading and all saying Amen 1 Cor. 14:7 Talking to let our requests be made known to Him Phil. 4:6 NOT talking to impress mortals with long prayers with vain repetition

  6. Worshiping in Spirit and in Truth In Spirit and in Truth--Praying Communing in Truth The New Testament church worship focused on the Lord s supper They came together to break bread Acts 20:7 They came together to eat the Lord s supper every week 1 Cor. 11; 16:2 Every person partook of the one bread and the one cup The Lord commanded them to do this and the rest of N.T. shows how Communing in Your Spirit/Soul My soul must discern His body when partake It is not a ritual, but a remembrance failure to decern brings damnation There may be exceptions, but His plan my soul to share with other souls

  7. Worshiping in Spirit and in Truth In Spirit and in Truth--Praying Giving in Truth His work has always demanded financing His work The tithing in the Old Testament; the bag which Judas kept Giving supports the work: evangelism, edification and benevolence Gifts were given weekly in Greece and Galatia (Europe and Asia) It was a gift planned, as prospered and joyfully given Giving results in God giving us more so we can do more Giving in Your Spirit/Soul Our work provides income, my soul decides how I use it God does not need our money, our souls need to give It is a fellowship giving with all others in the church

Worshiping in Spirit and in Truth In Spirit and in Truth--Praying Singing in Truth The New Testament church sang together Heb. 2:12 Singing is vertical and horizonal toward God and toward each other There was no instrumental music for 1,000 years Why?
