Have a chapter structure set out early on but be prepared to move things around. Set out what each chapter aims to do and how they contribute to answering the overall question. Break the chapters into discrete sections but include transitions. Patrick Dunleavy Authoring a PhD sets out three models of the PhD. Focus down, open up and compromise. His main point is that you should make sure that the core of the thesis is not left to the end. 5
