WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION IN TODAY S PRESENTATION WE WILL BE LOOKING AT BOTH WRITTEN AND UNWRITTEN RULES WE CAN UTILIZE AS OFFICIALS IN ORDER TO ENSURE AND MAINTAIN A FAIR AND ETHICAL COMPETITION. NOTE: THE BASIS FOR THIS PRESENTATION COMES FROM AN ARTICLE ENTITLED 16 UNWRITTEN RULES OF OFFICIATING THAT WAS PUBLISHED IN REFEREE MAGAZINE.

WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Every official knows the importance of the rules for competition. Regardless of the sport, there are some unwritten rules we should consider as well

WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Rules are rules and not mere guidelines to follow.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION When you THINK you saw something, you didn t. NOTE: See what you call and call what you see. Period.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Keep the meet/event moving, athletes and coaches hate standing around, as well as officials.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Provide courtesy to all athletes when it s needed.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Look coaches, athletes, and other officials in the eye when addressing them.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION When in doubt, do what is expected. NOTE: Officials will never be 100 percent sure of what they see 100 percent of the time.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Answer questions, not statements. NOTE: Answering statements may lead to arguments or disputes.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Don t answer questions you don t have information or unsure about. Don t be afraid to ask for help from another official.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Get the meet/event going after a mistake or disqualification.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Be 100 percent sure if making the unexpected call. NOTE: The more unusual the situation is, the surer you must be.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Don t insert yourself or disrupt the rhythm of competition, if it s not necessary.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Your reputation as on official will outweigh your ability to officiate. Also, know your limitations.

WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Officiate each athlete as if it s their last meet/event that they will ever participate or compete at. Treat all athletes the same.
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION PLEASE come prepared by having the basic equipment required to officiate at that meet. Don t rely on the site to have needed equipment (i.e. tapes).
WRITTEN RULES, ETHICAL PRACTICES, AND A FAIR COMPETITION Communicate with the meet manager or head official(s) prior to the meet, especially when traveling on the day of meet.
