  1. Year 1 Meet the Teacher

  2. Overview of the Year

  3. Parent Overview Each half term you will receive a Parent Overview via ParentMail. This will give you information about what we are covering that half term and key dates.

  4. Reading Library books In Year 1 the children get the opportunity to visit the school library once a week. Please can you ensure that they have this book on a Thursday to swap. School reading books Reading books should have now been given out. Levels have been passed up but we have also listened to all children read already. Children are expected to change these themselves. They can change them as soon as they have read them. We ask that you read with them at least 4 times a week. They will also be listened to in school both individually and as part of guide reading.

  5. This year the school English team is running a whole school reading initiative called BookFlix . Each year group has been asked to create a bookmark with suitable challenges for the term. For those who complete the book mark, they will receive a certificate and sticker in assembly. We ask that these are handed in the week before the christmas holidays.

  6. Phonics and Spelling Spellings and phonics are really important so if you wish to do some extra practise with your child we have put the common exception words, tricky words and phonics mats into the back of their reading record. Look at using these in conjunction with the school reading books. These will be tested at random points in the year to check children s progress. Year 1 Phonics screen meeting?! Year 1 Phonics screen- Week beginning 13th June

  7. PE and Forest School Children will have their weekly outdoor games session on a Tuesday afternoon with the school sports coaches. They will also have a weekly gymnastics session on a Friday morning with Mrs Buchanan to continue working on their BAGA awards. The children will also have a weekly forest school session on a Thursday afternoon. If conditions are less favourable due to the weather, we will ask the children to change into their outdoor games kit and wear their coat. If the weather is really wet your child may wear wellies to school on this day (in class they can wear their trainers).

  8. Snack We ask that all children bring a water bottle to school each day. We will be having a set snack time after break where the children will be given a piece of fruit. If your child struggles with the selection of fruit provided. Please feel free to send in a piece of fruit (this can be dried).

  9. Uniform As a school we feel that a school uniform encourages children to identify with and take pride in their school. It also helps to ensure that children are suitably dressed to enable them to focus on their work. Parents are therefore requested to send their children to school in uniform consisting of: Boys: Long or short grey trousers Green pullover or sweatshirt White shirt or polo shirt School shoes (not trainers) Girls: Grey skirt, pinafore dress or school trousers Green pullover or cardigan White blouse or polo shirt School shoes (not trainers) In addition, for art and technology, the children need a shirt (preferably a large one) to protect their clothes. Please mark all items of clothing with your child s name. School ties are available for those who choose to have them. Clothing for Physical Education and Games All children need a white t-shirt and black shorts with an elasticated waist for indoor lessons. In addition, a pair of black plimsolls are required. These can also be used when a change of shoes is necessary due to very wet weather. For general games lessons taken outdoors, children from Year 1 onwards need a warm change of clothes, i.e. a black tracksuit top and bottoms, and a pair of strong trainers. All P.E. clothing and shoes should be kept in a bag with the child s name clearly marked on the outside. When games kit is forgotten, children will be asked to wear a coat and go outside to watch the activities. As a general rule, if children are fit enough to attend school, they should take part in all activities. On the rare occasions when a child is not fit for P.E. or games, or swimming, a note should be sent from home to this effect. Jewellery and watches should not be worn in school. We accept no responsibility if these items are broken or lost. Girls with pierced ears are only allowed a small stud type earring and must be prepared to remove this before all P.E, games or swimming lessons.

  10. Parental Involvement Dojo- We hope to share most information via school dojo. Including pictures to help you and your child talk about their day. Please let us know if you do not want pictures of your child shared on class story. Parents sharing work- In the summer term we are hoping to create a museum for you to visit. We also hope to invite you into the BIG ARTS exhibition in Spring. STEM Week- We are going to invite parents in during STEM week in October to share with the children their professions. We unsure of arrangements for Christmas at the moment. We are waiting for further guidance. We will be performing something.

  11. Medicine If medicine needs to administered during school hours (this includes inhalers), you must complete the medicine admission form which is available on the school website. Then bring the form and medicine to the school office.

  12. GROW In 2017, through contribution from children, staff and parents, we developed our core values, known as our GROW values. These underpin life at Norris Bank, where we aim to ensure all children are taking responsibility for their behaviour and learning, while equipping them with the skills to be happy, successful young adults. To promote these values we will using our teddy mascots. The children will be able to earn the teddies if they show a GROW value that week. The teddy will go home on Friday and must be back in school on the Monday morning.
