Welcome to Year 2! Staffing Miss Lewis is the class teacher in 2A. Mrs Slater is 2A s class TA (Monday Thursday). Miss Carney is the class teacher in 2B. Mrs Hunter is 2B s class TA. The children will have Mr Smith for P.E. once a week.
Year 2 Expectations Since the new curriculum in 2014, expectations across Primary Education have increased, and Year 2 is no exception!
It is a government initiative that every child will complete an end of KS1 assessment in maths and reading. SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) is optional. Writing will be assessed be the child s class teacher. These assessments have to take place in May. They will be administered and marked by the class teacher and will take place in the child s classroom or intervention rooms in KS1. Some children may complete the assessments in small groups or individually. Although these assessments will be marked by class teachers they will be moderated within the year team, and could be moderated externally. These tests are part of our end of year assessments and will have no more emphasis for the children than their usual work expectations.
Reading Children must bring their reading books to school when they need changing. Books can be changed Monday Thursday. To build up fluency, please read a book with your child twice before changing. Please support your child by encouraging them to read on a daily basis, for a minimum of 10 minutes, and signing their Reading Record regularly. Ask your children how and why questions to check their understanding. We also have access to Active Learn. This provides children with a range of texts and also asks them questions about the book they are reading to check their understanding. Your child may also have access to additional reading apps. Please ask for log in information if needed.
The Curriculum A member of staff will listen to your child read within a guided reading or Read, Write, Inc session each week. Guided reading will be a taught session and will use a book which provides more challenge. Read Write Inc will teach the children a new sound a day, as well as reading a book at an appropriate level for the child.
The Curriculum As a school we use White Rose as our main Maths resource. The children are taught in class, however the work is differentiated to an appropriate level to suit the children s needs. Across the year we will be covering a variety of History and Geography topics: Significant People from the past (Neil Armstrong and Grace Darling) Great Fire of London The Titanic Science will be taught alongside these, and links to these topics will be made wherever possible.
Behaviour We will work together to create our class rules. The expectations across school are clear: Pride, Positivity and Politeness. In class we use a variety of different rewards; stickers, certificates, extraordinary zone, championship points and gold cards; to encourage children to make the right choices and praise them when they have done well. A traffic light system is used across the school to manage behaviour. If a child is not following our rules, they are given a warning. If it continues, they will move down the traffic light. If the behaviour still continues, they will be on red. This will lead to a consequence, such as a time out or a red card. At the end of each week, we have children s choice. Red cards take time off a child s children s choice time, as their consequence. We have a certificate assembly on a Thursday, where weekly awards are given out.
Handwriting At MRPA we teach handwriting through discreet sessions. The aim is to encourage and enable children to size their letters correctly in relation to one another and is being used throughout school. The children will progress from wide lines, to narrow lines, to normal lines throughout their time at school. The children have already had experience with this in Year 1. In Year 2 we will introduce them to joins when they are ready! Your child may be given a pencil grip to help correct their pencil grip to a tripod grip. This is nothing to worry about!
Homework Children will be set homework weekly on Teams. Please complete their work with them at home and upload a photo of this to the assignment. Staff with then mark this and award points! Homework will consist of a reading comprehension. Please support your child to complete these tasks. A weekly maths challenge will be set up on Sumdog. This will link to the child s current learning in school. Please ensure your child is accessing these each week. They will also be set high-frequency words and/or common exception words appropriate to their level to practise reading and spelling each week. We have access to Times Tables Rock Stars. Children in Year 2 are expected to know their 2x, 5x and 10x table by the end of the year, as well as counting in 3s. They are able to play a variety of games on there to build up these multiplication skills. As mentioned earlier, reading is the most important thing! Reading with your child, reading them stories and allowing them access to Active Learn will all help your child to develop this fundamental skill!
Bits and bobs Children need a full PE Kit for their PE days. It needs to consist of: A white t-shirt or polo shirt Dark shorts/ leggings/ joggers Black pumps or trainers Newsletters are sent electronically, however other letters may be sent out on paper so please ensure you read all letters regularly. Children are provided with a labelled, reusable bottle. Both classes will enter through the main door to the building. Miss Lewis s class will exit out of the pod door. Miss Carney s class will exit out of the main door to the building. Miss Lewis - 2A s twitter: @mrpayear2A Miss Carney - 2B s twitter: @mrpayear2B
