  1. Coundon Primary School Year 2 Guided Reading Home Learning Week commencing 1.6.20

Activities included in this PowerPoint FIRST AND FOREMOST, PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR CHILD READ EACH DAY this can be their reading book, magazines, comics, books from home, e-books or even sharing stories with yourselves. Included in this PowerPoint are a selection of guided reading activities in the style that we would usually use in school. There are enough activities for 1 week of learning. All activities can be completed in your child s exercise book. Activities are set at the Age Related Standard for Year 2. Some children will be able to complete these activities independently; some children will need adult support. If your child did not pass the Phonics Screening Test at the end of Year 1 or finds any of these activities particularly challenging, please use the phonics power point provided instead. This concentrates on the mastery of blending and segmenting skills needed to decode unfamiliar words. Each activity on this power point is based on some of the following reading skills: Vocabulary: Draw upon knowledge of vocabulary in order to understand the text Infer: Make inferences from the text / explain and justify inferences with evidence from the text Predict: Predict what might happen based on what you have read Explain: Explain your preferences, thoughts and opinions about the text Retrieve: Identify and explain the key features of fiction and non-fiction texts such as characters, events, titles and information Sequence: Sequence the main events of a story

Think about the following questions. Who are the two main characters? Where are they? What happens? The activities for the next three days will be based on this story!

Gravett Extract 1 Lake Park only had one Squirrel, All alone and sad (poor Cyril). Until the morning he met Pat, His new best friend, a big grey SQUIRREL! Just like ME! Pat and Cyril spend each day Thinking up good games to play. They liked to put on puppet shows, And test how fast a skateboard goes. Their favourite games were Hide-and-seek, And one that they called Pigeon Sneak. BOO! Answer the following three questions, using language from the text in your answers. How do Cyril s feelings change in this extract? Complete the following sentences. In the beginning ................................. In the end ................................. According to the text, what games do Cyril and Pat play? How do you know that Cyril and Pat are friends?

  5. Day Day 2 2: Cyril and Pat by Emily : Cyril and Pat by Emily Gravett Read this short extract fromCyril and Patand then try the activity below. Gravett (continued) (continued) Extract 2 Cyril ran, out of the park Into the city, into the dark. All alone and scared. Poor Cyril. 'Not quite alone, you stupid squirrel.' 'And not so brave without that rat.'. 'Ahem. Do you mean ME?' said Pat. Lake Park still only has one squirrel- But he is not alone. Now Cyril Lives there with a large grey rat, His brave and clever best friend, Pat. There are three main characters in the story Cyril the squirrel, Pat the rat and Slim the dog. In the table below are some examples of what the characters might say. Using what you know from extract 1 and extract 2, write the character s name next to what they might say. You must use each character once: Cyril, Pat and Slim.

We can use a dictionary or a thesaurus to find other words that have a similar meaning. Some of the words have a stronger meaning of sadness. We can put them on a scale to show how sad somebody is. Look at these words: gutted desolate crestfallen sorrowful upset unhappy https://www.thesaurus.com/ https://www.dictionary.com/ You can try the same for 'happy'. Here are some words and expressions to start you off: happy over the moon cheerful ecstatic chuffed content Take a piece of paper and draw a horizontal line across the page. Now write the words above on the line from the weakest word for sad to the strongest word for sad.

As George spoke the magic word, the ship s sails started to flutter as if a strong breeze blew through the room. He loved this moment, seeing his creations come to life Discuss the following questions: Can you continue the story of George s ship coming to life? What will he do with the ship now that it has magically appeared? He loved this moment, seeing his creations come to life. This refers to George s creations in the plural. What does this tell you? What other drawings might George have down in the past? Where are they now?
