Year 3 Autumn Term Curriculum at Willow Primary Academy
Willow Primary Academy's Year 3 curriculum for the Autumn term includes a diverse range of subjects such as English, Math, Science, History, Geography, Art, and more. Students will explore topics from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, Forces and Magnets in Science, and learn about prehistory, color theory, and cooking in Design & Technology. The curriculum also focuses on literacy, numeracy, physical education, geography, and religious education to provide a holistic learning experience for the students.

Willow Primary Academy | Taking PRIDE in all we do | Reading Our Reading Rocks lessons are based around Fred s Teaching. Science Our science project for this term is Forces and Magnets. The children will be reading extracts from a variety of texts including: - George s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl Children will learn about contact and non-contact forces, including friction and magnetism. They will investigate frictional and magnetic forces, and identify parts of a magnet and magnetic materials. - Rain before rainbows - Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen - Fantastically Great Women who Worked Wonders - Mae Among the Stars - Coming to England

PE Our PE focuses this term are: - Games Invasion (Netball/Rugby) - Dance Children will learn about British prehistory from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, including changes to people and lifestyle caused by invention and technological advancement. Geography Our geography project is called Our Planet, Our World. RE Our key questions for RE this term are: - What do Christians learn from the Creation story? - What is it like for someone to follow God? Children will learn to locate countries and cities, and use grid references, compass points and latitude and longitude. They will learn about the layers of the Earth and plate tectonics and discover the five major climate zones. They will also learn about significant places in the United Kingdom.
Willow Primary Academy | Taking PRIDE in all we do | Art Our art projects this term are: Design & Technology Our DT project this term is Cook Well, Eat Well. - Contrast and Compliment Children will learn about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and colour mixing. They will explore tertiary colours, warm and cool colours, complementary colours and how artists use colour in their artwork. Children learn about food groups and the Eatwell guide. They learn about methods of cooking. The children choose and make a taco filling according to specific design criteria. - Prehistoric Pots Children will explore different clay techniques, which they use to make and decorate a Bell Beaker-style pot.

Children will learn about light and dark. They investigate the phenomena of reflections and shadows, looking for patterns in collected data. The risks associated with the Sun are also explored. The children will be reading extracts from a variety of texts including: - Freedom Soup - The Hound of Ulster - Plants - Freddy and the New Kid Children will learn about the requirements of plants for growth and survival. PE Our PE focus this term is: - Gymnastics Children will learn about the history and structure of ancient Rome and the Roman Empire, including a detailed exploration of the Romanisation of Britain. RE Our key questions for RE this term are: - How do festivals and worship show what matters to a Muslim? - How do festivals and family life show what matters to Jewish people? Geography We will be continuing with our geography project, Our Planet, Our World.
Willow Primary Academy | Taking PRIDE in all we do | Art Our art projects this term are: - Mosaic masters Children will learn about the history of mosaics, before focusing on the colours, patterns and themes found in Roman mosaic. They will learn techniques to help them design and make a mosaic border tile. Design & Technology Our DT project this term is Making It Move. This project teaches children about cam mechanisms. They experiment with different shaped cams before designing, making and evaluating a child's automaton toy. - Beautiful botanicals Children will learn about botanical art. They will create natural weavings, two-colour prints and beautiful and detailed botanical paintings of fruit.

Children will learn about the features and characteristics of Earth's layers, including a detailed exploration of volcanic, tectonic and seismic activity. RE Our key questions for RE this term are: - What kind of world did Jesus want? - How and why do people try to make the world a better place?
Willow Primary Academy | Taking PRIDE in all we do | Art Our art projects this term are: Design & Technology Our DT project this term is Greenhouse. - People and places Children will learn about figure drawing. They will study the figure drawings and urban landscapes of the artist LS Lowry and create artwork in his style to show scenes from their school. Children will learn about the purpose, structure and design features of greenhouses, and compares the work of two significant greenhouse designers. They will learn techniques to strengthen structures and use tools safely. They will use their learning to design and construct a mini greenhouse. - Ammonite Children will learn about artistic techniques used in sketching, printmaking and sculpture.
