  2. A little note from us. What a strange year it has been! We just want to take this time to thank you for all of your hard work in school and it has been lovely to see lots of you completing your English home learning tasks too! We have enjoyed seeing and hearing all about your wonderful stories, diaries, reports and development of various writing skills. This is your last week of completing English work in Year 5 let s make it your best yet! From Miss Bates, Mr Scott and Mr Tooby

  3. Year 5 English The Last Week in Year 5 This week, you will start by completing spelling activities and writing a letter to your new Year 6 teacher. Then, to end the week you will spend some time perfecting some of your writing skills.

  4. Lesson 1 - For today s spelling lesson, explore Oxford Owl by using our Year 5 login https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ Username: coundonyear5 Password: spellings Click on the Extra Practice Zone Choose Year 5 and select any activity that you would like to complete. You can check your answers as you go along to see how you are doing. If you find the Year 5 one a bit tricky, try another year group activity

  5. Lesson 1 - Clouds Choose 5 words from the Year 3 and 4 list that you find tricky and 5 from the Oxford Owl spelling activity. Moons Choose 5 words from the Year 3 and 4 or the Year 5 and 6 list that you find tricky to spell and 5 words from the Oxford Owl spelling activity. Stars Choose 5 words from the Year 5 and 6 list and then use your reading book, a dictionary or words that interest you or choose another 5 words from the Oxford Owl spelling activity. You could really challenge yourself and pick 15 words to practise this week!

  6. Lesson 1 - Spelling practise task Use the techniques suggested in Spellings Practise ideas to help you remember these spellings. Use this lesson to practise spelling your selected words. Practise these spellings each day and ask a parent or carer to test you on Friday. Good luck! How many did you get correct? Are there any words you would like to add to your list for next week?

  7. Lesson 2 - Task KS: To write a letter Your task today is to write a letter to your new Year 6 class teacher. We know your new teachers are very excited to meet you in September but they would really appreciate getting to know a little bit about you before you start in Year 6. Write a truthful letter giving them the following information: Your feelings about Year 6 (what you are looking forward to and what you think may be some challenges you could face) Some achievements from this year Goals you would like to achieve in Year 6 A little bit about yourself On the next slide there are some example sentence starters and I have included an example of a letter format to remind you how to structure it. There is also an Clouds, Moons and Stars template in the linked resources which you can use if it will help you. You could always upload your letter onto Microsoft Teams or send it to your class email and we will send it on to your new class teacher You could even post it to school!

WA12 4QP. 1 Recipient's address Click on the coloured numbers to learn more about the layout of a formal letter. Greeting 2 Mr. S. Pilkington 32 Warren Drive, Warwickshire. S13 4AP. Date 3 Monday 26th November 2016 4 Dear Mr Pilkington, I am writing to complain about the vegetables purchased from your shop three days ago. Firstly, the potatoes which were not only hollow, but had an infestation of ants within them. Secondly, the 500g of mushrooms were actually doorknobs which had been painted grey. Last was the watermelon. Upon closer inspection this was no watermelon, rather a football painted green. Main body 5 This standard is unacceptable and I demand a refund for these goods.   10. Lesson 3 LO: To correctly use a relative clause. Remember that a relative clause is a clause that adds detail to a sentence using a relative pronouns. There are a number of relative pronouns that can be used such as who, whom, that, which and whose. Can you identify the relative pronoun in this sentence: Mr Scott, who works in year 5, enjoyed eating his delicious, rich chocolate cake.

  12. Lesson 3- Task LO: To correctly use relative clause. Now complete the work sheets for this lesson. Challenge- Can you come up with your own relative clauses one for each family member in your house

  13. Lesson 4 LO: To write effective sentences using fronted adverbials. A fronted adverbial is a word, phrase or clause that is used, like an adverb, to modify a verb or a clause. They are useful within descriptive writing as they can easily describe where, when and how an action occurred. A fronted adverbial appears at the start of a sentence and describe the action that follows. Typically, a comma is used after an adverbial.

  14. Lesson 4 LO: To write effective sentences using fronted adverbials. An example of a fronted adverbial (describing time) is: Before sunrise, Darius crept into the beast s cave. An example of a fronted adverbial (describing place) is: At the back of the cave, the terrifying creature began to stir. An example of a fronted adverbial (describing how an action is carried out) is: As quick as a flash, Darius rebounded behind a rock.

  15. Lesson 4- Task LO: To write effective sentences using fronted adverbials. Now complete the tasks on the worksheet Clouds- Pg 1- answers page on page 2 Moons- Pg 3 and 4- answers page on page 5 and 6 Stars-Pg 6 and 7- answers page on page 8 and 9.

  16. Lesson 5 For todays lesson, you have a number of challenges that you can try and complete. Pick one of the four challenges from the next few slides. Once you have completed one of the challenges, send it to your class teacher using the class email as they would really like to see your work.
