Key Question Your key question for these lessons are: Can I identify and sequence the key events in this story?
Expert tips Look at the expert tips cards on the next slide. Which card: Identifies the important parts of a text? Helps us think about how characters are feeling? Helps if we don t understand a phrase?

Expert tip- Summarise the text/Explore vocabulary Write your answers in your book Using key words and phrases- Write your own definitions in your books. What is an Avalanche? What is an Avalanche Transceiver? Read the last 2 sentences and explain why a skier might need to be tracked?
Summarise the text- Write your answers in your book Summarise the main events so far. Did anything confuse you? Clarify your understanding of those words by looking up the definitions in a dictionary or on the internet. Challenge word- Find todays challenge word (ominous) and work out what it means. Create your own sentence using the challenge word. Now read pages 20-21 using these tips (stop and check it makes sense, read it again and make connections through searching for clues) to help assist your understanding of difficult words.
Write your answers in your book How did Josh know he was digging in the correct place? Using evidence from the text (words or phrases), how was Josh feeling? Find a word which shows that Josh was stunned. Now read pages 22-24 on the next 2 slides.
Write your answers in your book Use our expert tips (found on slide 5) to answer this question. How did all the rescuers arrive to help them? Now identify and write down the important events of the story in sequence.
Write your answers in your book The characters in this story had a terrible experience, but they learned about how to survive. What are the essential things you need to do if you get caught in an avalanche? Using the expert tip: Summarise the text-What did Josh learn about how to survive an avalanche? Look at page 23 on slide 12. Why did they carve out an air pocket in the snow? Why would you stick your hand up high? Why would you carry an avalanche transceiver?
Would you want to go skiing? Explain using three reasons why you would or would not. How do you think Josh was feeling at the end of the story? How would you have felt? The next text .. The next text we will be looking at is called Trapped . Can you predict what it might be about?
Advice/Guidance for Guided Reading Work In addition to this work, you can read an entire book on Fiction Express and answer the quiz questions. Teachers will be mentioning the fantastic readers who manage this. Clouds- Read The Great Space Race and answer the quiz questions. Moons- Read Spacejacked! this week and answer the quiz questions. Stars- Read Curse of the Moon Children this week and answer the quiz questions. All teachers are regularly looking at the website and we would love to be able to mention as many children as possible.
