We are proud of how Year 6 children have settled back into school, focusing on respect, co-operation, and critical thinking skills. They have studied RE topics, developed reading and writing skills, and enhanced numeracy abilities through problem-solving activities. The curriculum includes exploring different areas such as Church sacraments, Advent symbols, Judaism, various writing genres, guided reading, and fractions in numeracy.

  2. Welcome to Year 6! We are so proud of how the children have all settled back into school after a very strange year! The Year 6 class rules reflect the ethos and mission statement of St. Mary s school. There is an emphasis placed on respect for peers as well as adults. Children are encouraged to work co-operatively with one another and with adults to ensure that they achieve their full potential. We continue to use the Thinking Skills: Thinking Hats and Habits of Mind which are incorporated in all lessons. These give children the opportunity to think about different areas of the curriculum focusing on particular channels of thinking. Have a look at what we have been getting up to so far this year

  3. We have studied 3 RE topics so far this year. In the first half term we explored the unit; Beginning with the Church where we looked in depth at the Initiation Sacraments and how their order in the Church has developed over time. We then looked at Advent to Christmas where we explored some of the symbols of Advent and what they represent. We have also been learning to pray the Lectio Divina which we really enjoy as it gives us the opportunity to reflect and meditate on the scripture which we read. We were also lucky enough to have a virtual Judaism workshop where we learnt about Jewish celebrations- we learnt about Jewish New Year which takes place in September!

  4. We have been developing both our reading and writing skills through a variety of writing activities including historical stories, campfire stories, bedtime stories, poetry, nature documentaries, villainous speeches and emergency transmissions from space to name a few! We always start off with a cold task at the beginning of the week which we then edit and improve by applying the spelling, punctuation and grammar skills that we learn throughout the week! We take part in guided reading twice a week where we are currently reading The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' which links in with our WW2 unit! We have also read Poppy Field as a class reading book and are currently exploring Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol !

  5. In numeracy we have been working on developing our skills and then applying them to problem solving activities and using our reasoning to explain our thinking and understanding! So far this year we have developed our understanding of number and place value, explored the four operations Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division- and how to use BIDMAS in order to solve problems with multiple operations. We are currently looking at fractions and so far we have learnt how to order and compare fractions, add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, find fractions of amounts and use our reasoning skills to solve multi-step word problems involving fractions!

  6. Light and Sounds Our Bodies We are currently learning about how light travels and that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes, or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes. We are learning that shiny or reflective surfaces alter the direction in which light travels. We have had the opportunity to solve problems related to everyday life about how light travels and how we see. We are beginning to investigate and explain the shapes of shadows, and relate this to light travelling in straight lines. Working Scientifically We continue to work to earn our Science Ninja Stickers and will have the opportunity to plan and carry out an investigation in the context of finding a reflective material for children s clothing. We will have the opportunity to use light sensors and data logging equipment to measure and record our observations and we will write a report detailing what we have concluded. In this unit we worked towards answering the question, How can we stay healthy? We recognised the impact of diet, exercise and lifestyle choices on the way our bodies function. We learnt that there are many different but related aspects to keeping healthy. We investigated the functions of the heart and circulatory system and described how nutrients and water are transported in human and animal bodies. Working Scientifically We worked to earn our Science Ninja Stickers while we investigated how exercise and heart rate are related, and also found out how scientific ideas about health have developed over time. We planned investigations and took measurements with accuracy and precision. We presented our findings in a number of ways, and explained causal relationships emerging from our own data.

  7. We have really enjoyed our History topic this term which was The Second World War. The Threshold Concepts that we covered were; Main Events, Conflict, Location and Society. We have been able to label a timeline with significant events in the Second World War, list some important events which took place after the war, explain why World War II began and order events from early World War II on a timeline. We have explained when, where and why children were evacuated in World War II. We have learnt about rationing during WW2 and how people adapted to deal with reduced product availability. We have found out about women s wartime jobs and described what they entailed in detail. We have understood what the Holocaust was and described some events that happened. We have recognised and understood the term Blitz and the effect which it had on Britain. In our last few lessons we will be exploring the consequences of the use of atomic weapons at the end of the war and understanding that the NHS was established in Post-war Britain.

  8. Out topic this term was Surrealism! The Threshold Concepts which we covered were; Artists and Artisans, Visual Language, Colour Theory, Effects, Techniques, Process and Emotions. We have been able to understand and explore the artistic movement of Surrealism . We have identified key Surrealist artists and looked at the use and effect of the visual language used within Surrealist artwork. We used watercolours and had a go at mimicking an artist s style. We observed and experimented with the use of colour in Surrealism and we have compared and contrasted this with other artistic movements. We have studied and had a go at creating some art based on automatism. We studied Salvador Dali in depth and thought about how he used both visual language and how he conveyed emotion. We learnt about the everyday symbols which Dali uses in his artwork and in the next few weeks we will be using oil paint and canvases to create our own pieces of surrealist art.

  9. We are so lucky in school that we have access to both the ICT suite and the iPads. We have been to the ICT suite to work on our coding skills and we have regular use of the iPads in the classroom to support our learning. Our next ICT unit is Film Making where we will be using some of the writing which we developed in our Nature Documentaries writing unit and recording and editing a voice over in the style of David Attenborough.

  10. We have access to both outdoor and indoor PE. Due to the pandemic, only outdoor PE lessons are able to take place but we are closely monitoring the situation to begin our indoor PE. We are taught by Mr Smith from Non-Stop Action. In the first half term we took part in athletics. We focused on our running, jumping and throwing skills. In the second half term, we are now focusing on football. We have been focusing on dribbling, defending and attacking.

  11. We have French once a week on a Thursday afternoon with our teacher, Mrs Ramdarshan. We have been revising some of the topics from last year and have begun to describe foods that we like and dislike, money and our numbers up to a million! Homework is given out on a Monday and should be completed and returned to school on Friday. If your child has any problems with the homework then we encourage them to speak to one of the year 6 adults in the week who will be more than willing to support them! Please ensure that your child continues to read each night for at least 20 minutes and that an adult has heard them. Their reading record should be signed each night.

  12. We thank you so much for all of your efforts and support this term and look forward to speaking with you in the future. If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact us. Yours sincerely, The year 6 team!
