They will understand what we believe about our Catholic Faith and reflect on our beliefs. The children will know some important Muslim beliefs and think about their importance. The children will know some Muslim celebrations and reflect on the meaning of them. The children will know some of the beliefs we share and differences between us. The children will also visit the chapel in school each week and take part in weekly prayer and worship in class with a different reflection focus each session to coincide with the liturgical calendar. How to help at home: Discuss other faiths with your child. Can they find similarities and differences between them? We will explore: the function of headings, the structure and presentation of information, cohesive devices and the language of possibility. We will plan, draft, edit and improve an historical information text. Writing Focus text (Poetry): What Are Heavy? by Christina Rosetti and There was a Naughty Boy by John Keats. We will explore: the meaning and development of ideas within each poem, features of the poems including beat and then plan, draft, edit and improve new lines for each of the poems. Spellings: Apostrophes, Adjectives and Adverbs, Words from the Year 5 list. Reading: The Island at the End of Everything (Fiction) Inference The London Eye Mystery (Fiction) Inference Mountain Masters (Non-Fiction) Mixed Questions A Boy Called Christmas (Fiction) Mixed Skills The Last Chance Hotel (Fiction) Mixed Questions How to help at home: Encourage your child to do some research on a topic they enjoy to help with their own information text. Read with your child every night and sign their diary. Have discussions with your child to check their understanding of what they have read. Maths This half term, in maths we will begin with a focus on geometry, looking at the position, translation of shapes. We will also look at lines and symmetry and the reflection of shapes. We will then move on to measurement in kilometres, kilograms, millimetres and millilitres. We will be comparing volume and capacity and converting units of measure including units of time. In addition, we will continue to focus on arithmetic each week, using arithmetic tests as a teaching tool to discuss methods and model how to approach the questions. How to help at home: Encourage your child to measure things out when you are cooking, look at the labels of foods and drinks to see which units of measure have been used. Can they convert them to a different unit of measure? In this unit, the children learn about materials, how they change and which changes are reversible and irreversible. The topic concludes by looking at how these properties are applied in the real world. Our History unit this half term is Journeys. In this unit, the children will explore the question of why people go on a journey, and look at five very different types of journey in depth. The journeys selected span from the Tudor period to those undertaken today by refugees. The children begin by studying the voyages of Walter Raleigh, then the voyage of the Irish 3rd class passengers on the Titanic, before learning about the Kindertransport in World War Two and the voyage of the Empire Windrush. Finally, they will examine why refugees make dangerous journeys today. Encourage children to observe which materials are used to make different things and ask why they think that material has been chosen. How to help at home: Research some of journeys mentioned. Can your child find any links between them? PE Music Real PE Unit 5&6 This half term the focus is Games Invasion, Conditioned games This half term, our learning in Music is linked to Make you Feel my Love by Adele. As well as singing and accompanying the song with musical instruments, we will explore pulse, rhythm and pitch. In addition, we will listen to, and evaluate, the work of other similar artists. Listen to some more songs by Adele at home with your child: Someone Like You , Rolling in the deep and Hello . We will also be learning how to ask for an ice cream with a particular flavour and the cost. In DT we will be completing the unit, Textiles: Combining Different Fabric Shapes. The children will look at some existing examples of insulating bags and then design, make and evaluate their own. How to help at home: Can you learn the names of different ice cream flavours? How to help at home: Can you find any insulating materials around the house? PSHE/RSE This half term, our unit is Aiming High. The children will focus on achievements, aspirations and opportunities. They will start by discussing achievements they have accomplished so far and the type of attitude that helps us succeed. Computing In computing, we will be focusing on 3D modelling. Children will learn to design models using online CAD software with a link to our history topic. How to help at home: Explore feelings at home with your child. Encourage them to think positively about themselves and how to recognise and deal with difficult emotions. How to help at home: Practice using CAD software at home such as SketchUp.
