Some Reasons Why It Doesnt Totally Happen.... 1. Board composition isn t optimal...lacks access I don t know people with resources 2. Board members don t fully understand: The important role of their YWCA in the community There are so many non-profits competing with us Their YWCAs financial facts of life We don t need to raise money...we have reserves Memberships, $50 luncheons are fine We can just cut expenses for every woman Raising money is the staff s job I volunteer my time...I shouldn t have to give and get Board members lack tools to be highly effective I hate to ask people for money I don t know what to say, and can t answer questions The Board s financial stewardship responsibility 3. 5
A Few Tips (7, to be exact) To Enhance Board Culture, Access, Motivation, Tools 1. Build the Board (a Strategic Board Nominations Process) Recruit 2 + Board champions from Arts, Education, Health Recruit 2 + Board members with access to major gifts 2. Kick-Up the Passion (engage intellectually, emotionally) e.g. Critical issues the YWCA addresses Consequences if needs go unmet YWCA successful outcomes/effectiveness How? for every woman New Board members orientation Mission moments...Board meetings Board budget content and process Direct service volunteer experiences Issue articles in Board packets 6
A Few More Tips.... 3. Educate Board members re. YWCAs financial facts of life e.g. Total costs by program Cost per client served/outcome Gap (and why e.g. clients can t pay) 4. Provide Training: Board roles re. governance duties The YWCAs CASE for support Tips/practice on asking 5. Conduct an Annual Board Campaign (as part of annual fund) Board adopts a Board goal Recruit board campaign committee Set ask for each member Every Board member gets a personal ask for every woman 6. Conduct Board PR Campaign e.g. Dec, Feb, May. 20x20x4=1,200 7. All Board members complete FD Commitment/Pledge 7
Board Members Personal FR Pledge Statement of why fundraising so critical to our YWCA Basic YWCA Board member responsibilities: 1. Make a stretch gift 2. Fill a table at our major event 3.
