Essential and Applied Subjects Essential and Applied Subjects Applied subjects are suited to students who are primarily interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to vocational education and training or work. Results in Applied subjects contribute to the award of a QCE and one Applied subject result may contribute to an ATAR. At Lowood SHS we do not recommend students wishing to undertake an ATAR enter an Applied subject. Students will need solid foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, applied learning, community connections and core skills for work from which to work in an Applied subject.

  3. Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions Do I need to have done Graphics in Junior? While it is of great help, it is not a pre-requisite. However, a student who has not studied Graphics in junior will need to put in much more effort to catch up on the basics.

In Industrial Graphics Studies we study graphical communication and it s link to industry across three contexts; - Graphics for the engineering industry. - Graphics for the furnishing industry. - Graphics for the construction industry. We look at different 2D and 3D graphical representation, drawing interpretation, symbols, Australian Standards as it relates to graphical representations across the three contexts.

There are three main types of assessments; - Practical demonstrations - Projects - Exam Practical demonstrations are usually in the form of drawing folios and take place within a time period allowing students to demonstrate their learning. Projects are similar to practical demonstrations in that they also include producing a folio of drawings but they also include a journal where the students demonstrate a further depth to their understanding. Exams are a set of questions or tasks that are answered or responded to in a given time frame under exam conditions.

There is a very close link between Graphics and any of the three trade subjects that can be studied at Lowood high as any trade requires its tradespeople to be able to interpret drawings to determine and guide work tasks. Even if you aren t interested in working in a trade after school it is still a great benefit to be able to read and interpret technical drawings as many vocations and recreational pursuits use technical drawings as a means of communication.
