Dual Credit Options by Class Standing Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior CTE Dual Credit (Tech Prep) College in the High School AP/IB/CI Running Start
What is Running Start? Statewide dual credit funding program for juniors and seniors Open to public, private, and home school students in WA state Credit is earned for college classes at both college and high school Therefore credit can apply to both high school and college graduation Tuition is waived (not fees) for participating students with quarterly documentation (RSEVF)
Types of Running Start Participants Full-Time Traditional Follows HS Graduation Requirements, HS issues diploma Part-Time Traditional Follows HS Graduation Requirements, HS issues diploma Takes 15+ credits/qtr Takes less than 15 credits/qtr Follows course equivalency guide Follows course equivalency guide Potential to earn Associate degree at the end of 2 years participation Potential to gain & transfer college credit Degree Completion Follows SPSCC degree requirements only, SPSCC issues diploma Takes 15+ credits/qtr Student does not walk at home high school graduation ceremony Must start Junior year full time to finish Associate degree at the end of 2 years participation

Who is Successful in Running Start? Independent learners Students ready for adult learning environment Students with good organizational and time management skills Students with a good support system Students unafraid to ask for help Students who can balance school, work, & other responsibilities
What classes can I take? Daytime classes Hybrid classes Classes usually run Monday-Thursday Typically in class about four hours a day Online classes About 15 hours a week of homework time Full tim e college = a full tim e job! Evening classes Lacey classes
Support Services on Campus All services are free to students Most services have virtual and in person options for assistance Can use as often as you want or need year round!
How to Qualify for Running Start Enrollment at public high school Or local school district for home school & private school students Junior or Senior status (determined by HS) Or by local school district for home school students Eligibility for or previous completion of college-level English English Guided Self Placement (English GSP) 10th Grade English SBA score of 3+ Other documentation (see RS webpage)
Cost of Running Start Running Start is not 100% free; Tuition is waived for a certain number of college credits per quarter Running Start students do not qualify for federal or state financial aid as they are still in high school Students are still responsible for the cost of: Course & Student fees (lab, technology, supplies, student activities) Tuition for pre-college courses & credits over funding limits (per RSEVF) All other costs (books, supplies, transportation) Total costs can vary from $300-$800+ per quarter, depending on: 1) class type, 2) books required, or 3) credits enrolled
Fee Waiver & Book Borrow Options Running Start students may apply for a Fee Waiver if they qualify for free/reduced price lunch (FRPL) May apply any quarter prior to tuition due date Approval is valid for the entire academic year Income eligibility can also be confirmed via USDA WIC qualification Fee Waiver participants are also eligible for Book Borrow Fall 2022 100% of book loan students received one book or more! New RS funding Increases the annual funding limit for Running Start students to 1.40 FTE (up from 1.20) Allows students to take more credit between the high school and college OR take up to 10 credits during the summer quarter with any unused enrollment Summer quarter now includes rising juniors 10 credits of funding available! Graduating Seniors still have After Exit option for 2024
Summer funding Summer between Sophomore and Junior Year 10 credit limit Up to 10 credits, if there s a remaining balance of unused enrollment Summer between Junior and Senior Year Summer RS *if not graduating- limited to HS grad reqs* Up to 10 credits, if there s a remaining balance of unused enrollment Summer after Senior Year OR After Exit (graduating HS & within 15 cr. to finish AA) Up to 15 credits, limited to degree grad reqs
Things to Consider: Is RS right for you? Readiness to be a college student Breaks and inclement weather Involvement in sports, drama, and other HS activities Access to student records Grade impact both on HS and college transcript These are NOT reasons to do Running Start: I don t like high school (or because you re in trouble there) My friends are doing it or My parents told me to Free college! I want to be at my high school with my friends
How to be ready for Running Start 9th Graders 10th Graders Complete PE before enrolling in RS Be ready for Algebra II or Integrated III next year. This might be the one class you need to keep and take at the high school. Become familiar with your HS graduation requirements Wrap up world language or be ready to enroll in it during your first year in RS Figure out what you want to do for your world language requirement Know exactly what you need for HS graduation so you can plan with your Ed Planner at SPSCC! Keep your grades up! Take advanced math if an option & you want to go STEM Apply to RS in April
