CHANNELING & PLASMONX I knew Sultan's scientific activity, on the CHANNELING phenomenon and polycapillary optics for X-rays, since the 90 of the last century, but our collaboration had a significant increase at the time when the INFN Strategic Project PLASMONX development of New Acceleration Techniques based on laser-produced launched at LNF. (dedicated to the plasmas) was SULTAN-14/07/2021 Danilo Giulietti
CHANNELING & PLASMONX Apparently the two fields of research do not seem to have much in common, but in reality this is not the case and perhaps the sympathy and mutual esteem between Sultan and me contributed to show the opposite, giving rise to a progressively more intense collaboration. CHANNELING & LPA In CHANNELING charged particles of great energy propagate inside the crystal lattice, producing a radiation due to the periodic disturbance of their motion. In Laser-Plasma Acceleration (LPA) the plasma waves excited by an intense ultra-short laser pulse carry electrons to energies of some GeV over centimeter distances. SULTAN-14/07/2021 Danilo Giulietti
CHANNELING & BETATRON RADIATION In ponderomotive forces associated with the laser pulse create a sort of low electron density channel in which the bunch of energetic electrons performs oscillations, such as those occurring in a FEL undulator, with consequent emission of X-ray radiation. CHANNELING CONFERENCE It is therefore clear how a fruitful collaboration between Sultan and the group of the University of Pisa has been possible on these issues, concretized in particular within the numerous editions of the International CHANNELING Conference, but not only . Quantum Optics and Plasmas During the repeated visits at LNF, Sultan held broad cultural lectures (truly masterful!) to the students of the Quantum Optics and Plasmas Course, illustrating the laboratory. Those lessons were so fascinating as to condition the choice of the next and upcoming Master's Thesis of some students . activities in his SULTAN-14/07/2021 Danilo Giulietti
MEPhI and Pisa University Another opportunity for collaboration was to contribute to the teaching activity (on the topics of our research) of a prestigious Moscow University (MEPhI), generally favoring the exchange of students researchers between the University of Pisa, LNF and Russian Universities. and young SULTAN-14/07/2021 Danilo Giulietti
PLASMONX & SPARC I remember Sultan in the numerous meetings when the PLASMONX project was to start, with the construction of the installation connected to the SPARC bunker through two long holes dug in the basalt, the commissioning of the 0.3 PW Ti: Sapphire laser, the first Laser-Plasma Acceleration experiments, Thomson PLASMONX laser and the SPARC LINAC, .... SULTAN & LNF His observations and suggestions were always timely and constructive. Although not directly involved in the project, Sultan sensed its potentialities consequences that would have resulted for the LNF. On those occasions and many others in which I found myself involved in LNF activities with him, I always observed how Sultan put LNF first! This, I believe, is one of the reasons why Sultan is so considered by the colleagues, as well as for his undisputed skills and natural sympathy, which is manifested through a smiling approach to the people with whom he comes in contact from time to time . and the positive SULTAN-14/07/2021 Danilo Giulietti
