ACUTE CARE SURGEON Trauma Surgery, Emergency General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care (SICU) Trauma GSW, KSW, MVC, MCC, Falls, Electrocutions, Burns, Anything that involves injury to someone (chainsaw, impalements, Augers, crush injuries) Emergency General Surgery Appendicitis, Gallbladder problems, Perforated or bleeding ulcers, Colon/Intestine perforations, Skin/Soft tissue infections Surgical Intensivist Provide care for critically ill surgical patients in the ICU (Surgical ICU, Trauma ICU, CV ICU, Neurosurgical ICU, etc.)
MY TYPICAL DAY AS AN ACUTE CARE SURGEON There is no typical Every day is something different deal with whatever comes in the door Operative cases, rounding on inpatients, seeing new consults and admissions ED, OR, ICU, Floor + ANYWHERE someone needs help LOTS OF PAPERWORK DOCUMENTATION Teaching/education residents, medical students, PA/NP/RN students Start 0630/0700 End ??? ----> When the work is done and the patients are taken care of Mix of 12 and 24 -hr shifts usually 14 to 30+ hrs Shift based model 10-18 12 hrs shifts/month (5-9 24 hrs shifts/month)
