Challenges and Achievements in EOSC-hub Integration
Major achievements and challenges faced by OPENCoastS in integrating with EOSC-hub. The project has shown success in user reception and future development plans, but encounters difficulties in accessing model forcing services, funds for dissemination, and dealing with technical obstacles like integration, interoperability, and resiliency. Detailed insights into resources and services integration within EOSC-hub are also provided.

Roadmap and Challenges for OPENCoastS eosc-hub.eu @EOSC_eu EOSC-hub receives funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 777536.
Status of OPENCoastS Status of the TS: operational from last May 2 07/03/2025
Major achievements Users reception at EU level was good (7 countries trained and using the service) Interest in further developments (3D simulations,..) Plans for integration of this tool as part of M.Sc. Courses classes in Spain and France Good integration with EOSC core services (EGI based), integration with EUDAT planned LNEC | 3
Faced difficulties (1) European-wide services for model forcing are not frequently available Need to resort to area-limited solutions (such as Meteo-France and IPMA atmospheric predictions) Need to resort to North-American providers (GFS, ) LNEC | 4
Faced difficulties (2) Insufficient funds for service dissemination and training Having the EOSC-hub core services and thematic services being integrated at the same time made OPENCoastS integration more complex Operational costs recovery seems complex LNEC | 5
Technical obstacles Much of the technology is there but needs improvements: - Integration and interoperability - Documentation and training - Troubleshooting and support Especially true when combining multiple services - Ex. lost much time on AAI and data movement aspects Resiliency and high availability should be everywhere - Particularly important for forecast services 6 07/03/2025
Resources and service integration in EOSC-hub: Current Implementation Authentication and Authorization - Using EGI check-in service for the front-end - Using X.509 for Computing Elements and DIRAC (robot certificates) Cloud computing - INCD OpenStack cloud integrated in the EGI Fedcloud - Housing the front-end, back-end and Geo-processing - Object storage for data - Cloud also being used for executing the simulations EGI High Throughput Compute service - Provides additional compute capacity - Using Computing Elements (batch clusters) for simulation - Brokering of compute tasks via DIRAC LNEC | 7
Resources and service integration in EOSC-hub: the next steps Integration with EUDAT services - Data staging - Long-term data storage and FAIR Improve high availability - Exploit geographic distributed resources - Cloud, High Throughput Computing and data storage On-demand instances - Possibility of deployment of own instances of the service in the EOSC cloud sites LNEC | 8
Added value First European service available to all to make predictions of water circulation in European coasts, without requiring IT personnel direct effort (on-demand) Service usable in real time and as repository for climatological studies (from emergency to risk management) Linking coastal science with EOSC infrastructure computational resources linking people/teams, opening the door for other uses of the EOSC infrastructure in this community LNEC | 9
