Sign language interpreters at Stockholm University The Interpreting Services at Stockholm University (SU) was established in 1987 20 sign language interpreters 5 Speech to text interpreter 8 Coordinators/administration Hire around 20-40 interpreters on freelance basis depending on our needs. The aim of our unit is to provide students with deafness, hearing impairment or a combination of hearing- and visual-impairment (deaf-blindness) with interpreting services in all situations related to their studies, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level. to provide all employees (staff members) regardless of hearing status interpreting services in all work related situations. All interpreting services are free of charge for students and staff members. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
What do we interpret? We interpret everything related to the student s education; lectures, group discussions (group work), workshops, field studies, traineeships, presentations, supervising, defending of thesis, chatting with fellow students during breaks etcetera. Staff interpreting, including for phd-students, normally consists of lectures, domestic and international conferences, staff meetings. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
How do we operate? We offer our services all year around (24/7). Start-up weeks . The co-ordination team starts to collect information about the semester: enrolled students, schedules, etcetera from all universities affiliated with us. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
Coordinating team The team of coordinators consists of seven people, of which one is the group leader Two coordinators work with long term planning and prognosis/statistics. Three coordinators work part time with short term planning, and part time as interpreters. One of the team members focuses on updating schedules. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
Head interpreter The head interpreter is checking schedules well in advance and reports changes to the coordinators. They contact lecturers in advance to inform about educational interpreting, ask for Powerpoint presentations and give additional information about the service. They acts as the link between the deaf student(s), the lecturer and the interpreting team assigned to the course/programme. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
How do we work in the field? We normally work in pairs. We take turns interpreting, 15-20 minutes per turn. We inform the lecturer in advance about how we work and ask for preparation materials (head interpreter). Statistics On average we perform around 17.000 hours of interpreting per year including staff assignments. Less than 0.2 % of all interpreting hours are not performed (often due to too short time notice of sickness on the part of the interpreter or late reservation of service by the student). /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
Cost coverage for interpreting All universities must allocate 0.3% of the educational budget to costs for staff providing disability support. If the university has additional costs, they can request for extra grants from a national fund. There is not an explicit legal support for sign language interpretation service. Sweden has an anti-discrimination law stating that a inadequate accessability is regarded as discrimination. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
Staff interpreter contracts 1700 annual working hours Approx 500 interpreting hours - preparation, travel etcetera 170 skill development hours (English, international sign, etcetera) /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
Student evaluation On a regular basis questionnares are sent to our students to evaluate our services. Head interpreters do follow-ups on-site. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
The world is changing and so are we An increasing number of lectures are being held in spoken English. The technical development has made things easier, both for us and for deaf students. Students may demand new interpreting methods, for example those with cochlea implants (CI). Increasing demand for STTI. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
The world is changing and so are we During the last couple of years almost all sign language interpreters on staff has achieved proficiency interpreting from spoken English into SSL. Our five STT interpreters have the same skill, but interpret from spoken English to written English. /Thomas Pirander, Unit of educational interpreting
