2020 REVISED CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT PLANS PHYSICAL Sciences GRADE 12 Implementation: June 2020
Presentation Outline 1.Purpose 2.Amendments to the Content Overview for the Phase; 3.Amendments to the Annual Teaching Plan; 4.Amendments School Based Assessment (SBA) 5.Conclusion
1. Purpose To mediate the amendments of the trimmed and re-organised 2020 Annual Teaching Plan including School Based Assessment for Physical Sciences Gr 12 for implementation in June 2020 as stipulated in Circular S2 of 2020. To ensure that meaningful teaching proceeds during the remaining teaching time as per the revised school calendar. To assist teachers with guided pacing and sequencing of curriculum content and assessment.
1. Purpose (continued) To enable teachers to cover the essential core content /skills in each grade within the available time. To assist teachers with planning for the different forms of assessment. To ensure learners are adequately prepared for the subsequent year/s in terms of content, skills, knowledge, attitudes and values
2. Amendments to the Content Overview for the Phase
Summary: Amendments to the Content Overview for the Phase Knowledge Area Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12 No amendments No amendments No amendments No amendments No amendments MECHANICS Removed: Geometrical Optics: Refraction, Snell s law, critical angles & total internal reflection 2D & 3D Wave fronts Diffraction WAVES, SOUND AND LIGHT Removed: Magnetism No amendments Electromagnetism: Removed all calculations ELECTRICIT Y AND MAGNETISM

3. Amendments to the Annual Teaching Plan
Summary: Reorganisation of content topics Term 2: The time allocated to Work, energy and power was reduced from 10 hours (CAPS) to 8 hours. Term 2: The time allocated to The Doppler effect was reduced from 6 hours (CAPS) to 4 hours. Term 3: Electrochemical reactions and Fertilisers were moved to Term 4.
Summary: Content/Topics Amended Content Term Amendment Time reduced from 10 hrs to 8 hrs Work, energy and power 2 Time reduced from 6 hrs to 4 hrs Doppler effect 2 Electrochemical reactions 3 Moved to Term 4 Fertilisers 3 Moved to Term 4
4. Amendments School Based Assessment (SBA)
Summary: Revised Programme of Assessment Term Task SBA Weighting 1 Experiment 35% 30% (was 10% and June exam was 20%) Control Test 3 Trial Examination 35%
Summary: Examination Structure The trial and final examinations will each consist of two papers: Paper 1: physics Paper 2: Chemistry The total of each paper will be 150 marks and the duration will be 3 hours each. There are no changes to weightings of topics in final papers. Changes to the weighting of topics in trial papers:
Summary: Revision Trial Examination Structure Paper 1 Weighting Marks Knowledge Area 48,7% 73 (was 63) Mechanics 11,3% 17 (same) Waves, Sound & Light 40% 60 (was 55) Electricity & Magnetism 0 0 (was 15) Matter & material TOTAL 150
Summary: Revision Trial Examination Structure Paper 2 Weighting Marks Knowledge Area 40% 60 (was 48) Matter & Material 60% 90 (was 84) Chemical Change 0 0 (was 18) Chemical Systems TOTAL 150
Conclusion The ATP does not cater for te discussion and corrections of the March test and the Trial examination. Time allocated per topic is a guideline teaching might be shorter/longer depending on the situation in each school. Time allocated should be enough to complete the revised ATP. Learners should be encouraged to do revision outside the normal school hours.
