Developing Health Literacy True or False Vaping Using the chat function and type true or false if you know the answer
Grade 6 is a common age to first try vaping Over 90% vape juice has nicotine Only 13% of youth thought their vape juice had nicotine In one e-juice pod is equivalent to 20 cigarettes worth 31% of e-cig users started smoking within 6 months The company that makes and markets JUUL recently exceeded a $10 billion valuation faster than any company, including Facebook JUUL delivers high levels of nicotine (more than a cigarette), making the product extremely addictive 70% of youth are regularly targeted with e-cig advertisements Flavours like cotton candy, and strawberry cover the taste of heavy metals Second hand smoke settles on household furniture/fabrics and contain cancer causing particles and nicotine Vaping is linked to popcorn lung (scaring/narrowing of airways) **Popcorn lung was first discovered when workers in a popcorn factory developed breathing problems after inhaling diacetyl, a chemical that is used to give foods a buttery flavor. Diacetyl is also found in some liquids that are inhaled through an e-cigarette. Vaping is a gateway drug to cocaine and smoking Youth were tricked/duped by marketers who own big tobacco (Malboro for example) Smoking rates declined since the 1960s but now there is a new generation of nicotine addicts and smokers Vaping is only recommended for 2 pack a day smokers
Health Promoting Classrooms Check yourself: Perfect I need ..a coffee/tea/Tylenol I am so tired today That s bad/wrong if you You re good/right if you Look for cognitive distortions and thinking traps: Black or white thinking most of life is grey (no always , never , forever etc.) Catastrophizing Knowing the future Challenging negative thinking tool
-The Opportunity!! Optimal age for a discussion around internal/external locus of control why do we do what we do? Optimal age for decision making what feels right for me and what is not something I want for myself forming a sense of identity Brains have developed enough to understand the grey in life and the continuum of use
Decisional Balance Activity Good things about drugs Bad things about drugs Good things about not using Hard things about not using
