Provincial Success Dual credit programming has been growing over the last 20 years
Provincial Success There have been over 20,000 secondary students that have taken advantage of dual credits This program continues to grow across the province with innovative and diverse programs
Who are the players? Imperative that you have a good relationship with all of the board and college contacts Develop the relationship through meetings and 1:1 conversations Have at least one formal meeting with boards to review last year
Who are the players? Recommendations from the boards are reviewed to see what we can support Very important to treat all boards equally Continue throughout the year informally with board and college contacts
Delivery Method 1. Integrated (at the college) - Most authentic college experience but also the most challenging - Class times vary - Could be only one high school student in the class
Delivery Method 2. Team Taught (At the high school) - Works well because students do not have to leave the school and they are still getting a college credit from a college instructor - Try to have students come to college campus for a visit - Still are registered college students
Delivery Method 3. Congregated (At the college) - High school students from different school boards all in one class - Easier to manage - Continue to have the same college instructors for these classes who have experience working with high school students - Try to schedule multiple congregated classes same day same time to help DC teachers
Delivery Method 4. Congregated at the high school - Similar to team taught but the high school teacher acts as the dual credit teacher - Not team teaching - Fits easily into class times
What to offer? Success will be more likely if everyone is consulted in the program development Boards know their students and what their needs are Important to offer a wide spectrum of deliveries and subject areas
What to offer? Important to know where the Ministry /SCWI are targeting groups such as Indigenous, Women in Trades, Technology-funding usually follows targets SCWI allows up to have creativity in our programming as long as we remain funding neutral. If a program isn t working well or we see a different need we can make changes
Getting the right students in the right classes for success As with any program it is important to have the right students Schools know their students and the dual credit program Having a Dual Credit champion in the schools If we have a concern re: a student we will call the guidance counsellor Students should be at least in grade 11 and have 16 credits We offer free counselling services through the health center for all of students if they would like it We also offer support through our office if someone is having difficulty
Marketing Student Portal Website Posters / Images for schools Social Media

Dual Credit Fair It s well known just most people think it s for academic students Teachers telling them Sitting down in private with your guidance counselor Advertised more in the school and thoroughly explained More announcements Creating a newsletter Internet Signs Posters telling them what kinds SLC offers Email
What is something you could change about DC? More than once a week: I was too shy and didn t participate a lot Less students in the class Longer dual credit day Split into two days Nothing That it would still be going on Not making it online Not during school hours More options Time of day of the class
What was your favourite thing about your Dual Credit? Getting 2 credits Classroom discussions When we got to weld Going to the college Adapting to the Kingston Transit system. I enjoyed my teacher! Using SLC online platforms and resources Meeting new people Interactive teacher Independence My SWAC teacher They treat me like an adult Only one day a week: Experience of college life
