Marine Space competing interests including major growth of renewable energy. 2. Ensuring fair green & digital transitions especially for traditional maritime sectors. 3. Global competitiveness high EU environmental & social standards, but major reliance on seafood imports. 23/09/2024 Presentation for the Committee on Fisheries (PECH) 5

4. Opportunities, challenges & prospects 4. Opportunities, challenges & prospects Strengths BE policy is integrated with wider EU policy on green and digital transitions. Multiple initiatives address blue skills and knowledge gaps. EU seeks to maintain high environmental and social standards. Opportunities Direct support to BE operators Incentivise maximising marine space. Environmental and social standards are applied to imports. Support shorter supply chains - doing more at point of EU production/landing Weaknesses Transition support is high-level - inaccessible to small-scale operators. Funding targets tech providers, not the BE operators. EU over-reliant on imports, long supply chains. Threats Lack of marine space & prioritisation of renewable energy. Displacement of existing users. Non-EU competition may lead to increase reliance on imports. Future trade disruptions may further impact the EU (blue) economy. 23/09/2024 Presentation for the Committee on Fisheries (PECH) 7
