  3. In first grade we use a wide variety of engaging lessons to teach our math content. Students will be asked to use different strategies, talk about their thought process, and engage with their classmates. We use a hands-on learning approach to ensure all students master the content.

  4. We will continue to teach the newly adapted literacy curriculum called EL Education. This program focuses heavily on phonics, student collaboration, and bringing real world experiences into the classroom. Modules will focus on reaching reading, science, and social studies standards through real world experiences and topics. Skills block lessons will help reinforce your child s knowledge of letters and sounds. Writing skills are incorporate into both Module and Skills Block.

  5. Students are able to purchase a lunch from the cafeteria or bring a lunch from home. Lunch from the cafeteria is NOT free this year as it has been the last 2 years. The cost of a student lunch is $3.00. Please pay online or send in a labeled envelope with your child s name. Visitors are welcome during lunch time. Please sign in at the office. There is a designated visitor table for you to sit at with your child. Lunch for adults is $5.00. Fast Food is not permitted.

  6. We will have recess and brain break each day. Recess is at 1:15 and brain break is at 2:45. Please send a jacket/sweater/sweatshirt once the weather is cooler. Toys from home are not permitted at school/recess. If it is raining, we will have indoor recess in the classroom. Please wear closed toed shoes each day.

  7. We keep homework to a minimum in First Grade, but the following things are extremely important to your child s success this year: We request that your child reads at least 20 minutes 5x per week(at home). Please begin practicing math facts (addition and subtraction within 10 and then up to 20 when your child is ready). IXL lessons are usually assigned after Fall Break.

  8. Students are expected to be Appropriate, Safe, and Kind in the classroom and throughout the school building. Students are given a verbal warning for poor behavior choices. If behavior continues, students will walk 5 minutes at recess. If behavior persists, they will walk 10 minutes. If behavior continues, parents will be notified by note, email or phone call.

  9. We are excited to get back to field trips this year. Although we have not scheduled any at this time, we look forward to providing meaningful field trips that engage students and enrich their learning. Here are some general guidelines for field trips: All students must have a signed permission slip for all field trips. This includes on campus field trips. Although some field trips don t allow volunteers, we appreciate and encourage them when applicable. Siblings are not permitted to attend field trips.

  10. ARRIVAL Arrival for cars will continue to take place in the parking lot loop at the back of the building. No LEFT turns are allowed out of campus. Parents will enter the drive by making a RIGHT turn onto campus from James Blvd. Do not get out of the car until a safety patrol member opens your door. All students will enter through the cafeteria side of the building. Students may enter the building at 8:15 and will must go to the cafeteria where they will be dismissed to class at 8:30. The school day starts at 8:40

  11. Thrasher will use the PikMyKid app for dismissal. Please do not park in the staff parking lot to dismiss your child. If you are driving a vehicle, please pick your child up in the car line. For the safety of students, bikers are dismissed through the parking lot, and we cannot have cars driving as bikers are leaving. Dismissal changes must be made on the PikMyKid app before 2:30. Only emergency dismissal changes will be approved by Mr. Paulson after this time. The office cannot accept email or phone changes after this time.

  12. For the safety of all students, please refrain from using your cell phone in the car line during dismissal. Help us focus on the students. If your child is a walker, please walk over to the front doors to dismiss them. Students CANNOT cross the parking lot in front of the school alone. Buses are dismissing from this lot and it poses a hazard for students to cross unattended.

  13. Please send your child with a healthy, dry snack everyday. Please make sure your child has a flip-top water bottle labeled with his or her name. We now have multiple water bottle refill stations, so one small bottle is sufficient. Please make sure their water bottle has a leak-proof lid. Your child will need a set of headphones to keep at school.

  14. Toys, distracting accessories/jewelry should be left at home. Folders and agendas are checked daily. Please make sure your child returns his/her folder and agenda each day. Parents are expected check and initial the agenda each day. Remember, no news is good news.

  15. Each classrooms Room Parent will coordinate classroom parties. Classroom parties are planned by the wonderful parents of our students. The Room Parent is in charge of sending a few class emails (on behalf of the teacher and PTA), creating Sign-Up Genius lists for the parties and helping the teacher communicate other special events. If you are willing to help lead class parties and be our Room Parent, please email your child s teacher as soon as possible.

  16. Your child may bring in a pre-approved class treat to share during lunch time. (minimum of 24 hours notice required) Treats must be store bought. Each first grade classroom has 20-24 students. Non-edible treats such as pencils or stickers are also permitted. Balloons are not allowed due to allergies. Due to privacy rules, we cannot share contact information for classmates. Joining the PTA s Directory Spot is the best way to share your contact information and access the information of your child s friends. This is helpful for planning birthday invitations/playdates. We are not permitted to pass out invitations to birthday parties. This ends up with hurt feelings, even if a child is in a different class.

  17. Meaningful technology will be used in the classroom. There are many excellent learning sites available that provide differentiation and engaging learning opportunities. We are required to use only approved sites and keep screen time to a minimum. Your child will need a pair of labeled headphones to keep at school.

  18. We look forward to having volunteers back in the classroom! We greatly appreciate our volunteers, and it is one of the reasons Thrasher is such a special place. We will begin having volunteers in the classroom sometime in September. Your child s teacher will notify you when you can sign up and when she is ready for you. Anyone wanting to help before classroom volunteers begin let your child s teacher know. There are always volunteers needed to make copies and other clerical-type tasks.

  19. Important school events are highlighted each week in Mr. Paulson s Panther Post. Each 1st grade student will receive a Panther Pride award this year. Panther Pride awards are presented during most of the Friday assemblies. These awards recognize outstanding character.

  20. Thank you so much for coming tonight! We look forward to an amazing 1st grade year!

  21. We must have your permission to include your child in group/class photographs. To give or deny permission, please fill out this google form:
