  1. Fifth Grade Welcome!

  2. Welcome to Fifth Grade! We are excited to begin a new school year. Ms. DeLapp (Math) Mrs. Jackson (Reading) Mrs. Tara Johnson (All subjects) Mrs. Starr (Science & Social Studies) Mrs. Prather (Language Arts) Mrs. Jennifer Rohrer (Student Support Teacher)

Moss Policies Dress Code (see student handbook) Visitors Check in at the front office for visitor tag Only LK Moss Staff is permitted to escort students to classrooms on the first day of school Car Rider Tags (Visor or Hang) Numbers instead of names Contact the front office if you need a car rider tag

Policies Continued Absences/Tardies Tardy Bell rings at 7:45 No one will be walked to class Instructional Time begins sharply at 7:45 Please be aware that 5 unexcused tardies or early checkouts will result in 1 absence as it relates to perfect attendance. Once 5 unexcused tardies or early checkouts accumulate, your child will lose perfect attendance for that nine weeks and it will prevent them from earning perfect attendance for the year.

  5. Homework and Agendas HW and tests will be written in agendas daily! It is your child s responsibility to write it down DAILY! Teachers will check agendas during homeroom each day! Agendas are a daily form of communication between the child, parent, and teacher. Please be sure to check and initial your child s agenda DAILY! All information will be sent through the Classtag app as well. We will use ONE grade level Classtag for all messages. All guardians must sign up for the app to communicate with teachers. All grades will be available to view via the online Parent Portal. Information will be forthcoming. All student technology passwords and log in information will be forthcoming.

  6. 5thGrade ClassTag App ClassTag is an app that can be downloaded to your phone to receive messages Electronic communication is critical during the academic year Families must sign up by August 8th ClassTag messages are the most effective way to communicate with your child s teacher

  7. Eagle Behavior Plan Behavior Offenses 1 2 3 4 5 6 Students are capable of earning rewards by following the procedures and routines of the school. If the student chooses not to adhere to the Code of Conduct outlined in the student handbook the following will occur: Off Task Out of Seat Disrupting Class Not Following Directions Not Keeping Hands/Feet/Objects to self Inappropriate Behavior in Hallway/Bathroom/Cafeteria Excessive Talking Disrespectful to Student/Teacher Unacceptable Language Students will receive at least 1 warning prior to the assignment of a behavior mark. Students who continually receive behavior marks will receive a discipline referral. Severe behaviors may require immediate consequences. ***Students who have 3 or less behavior/ responsibility marks for the whole month will be rewarded with a PAY Day (additional recess ) at the end of each month. *** 7 8 9 Responsibilities A B C D Incomplete Class Assignments No Homework No Pencil/Paper/Pen Other Supplies Needed Student Name X ____________________________ Parent Signature X____________________________

  8. Please Keep in Mind: Teachers are assisting parents to help students be responsible and independent. Teachers are preparing your child to transition to middle school successfully. Teachers may be using their cell phones for behavioral purposes, communication tools, or timers.

  9. Georgia Standards of Excellence Fifth grade teachers will be teaching the Georgia Standards of Excellence. These standards can be found at : www.georgiastandards.org Students will be tested over these standards when they take the Milestones Test in the spring.

  10. Grading Averages on progress reports and report cards will be based on grades from daily work, performance tasks, assessments, and homework. Graded papers will be sent home as they are completed, graded, and recorded. Check your student s backpack and Parent Portal for grades. Parents will be able to view grades on Parent Portal.

  11. Benchmark Testing Benchmark tests will be given in Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science 3 times a year to track students progress towards mastery of the Georgia Standards of Excellence.

  12. Language Arts and Writing (Yellow) E. Prather/T. Johnson Writing Genres Informational, Narrative, and Persuasive Grammar and Language Skills in our Writing, Speaking, and Usage Writing on the Milestones test constructed response and essay Weekly grammar and spelling assessments will be given on Fridays Students will keep a grammar notebook

  13. Math (Blue) P. DeLapp/T. Johnson Folders for math are blue and will serve as an organizational tool. Students will take notes and have supplemental items in their folders. Multiplication facts will be assessed three times a year: expectation is 100 problems in 3 minutes (2-12 facts only) Eureka Math books will be used for instruction: Learn book for classroom and Apply book for homework and parent tips Math homework will be nightly. Eureka Math videos are available to assist with homework Technology will be used in addition to the workbooks

  14. Reading (Green) K. Jackson/T. Johnson We will be using Fountas and Pinnell and the Wonders reading programs Accelerated Reader goals are individualized (More information will be sent home later) Lexile based Novels, texts, etc. Moby Max, Readworks and USA Test Prep will be used in addition to Wonders textbooks Textbooks must go home on Wednesdays

  15. Science (Red) A. Starr/T. Johnson We will complete units in Science. An assessment will be given at the end of each unit Units could last 3-6 weeks depending on the topic Units are Earth, Life, and Physical Science standards will be assessed on the Milestones Tests in the Spring as well Science folders will contain notes for students to use to study for assessments

  16. Social Studies (Purple) A.Starr/T. Johnson We will complete units in Social Studies An assessment will be given at the end of each unit Units could last 3-6 weeks - depending on the topic Units are History, Civics and Government, Economics and Geography Social Studies folders will contain notes for students to use to study for assessments End of year project, students will complete an interactive notebook throughout the year

  17. Progress Learning (previously USA Test Prep) This website will serve as the benchmark for Social Studies and Science It will also be used as practice for the Milestones for ALL subjects Graded assignments will come from this site

  18. Parent/Teacher Relationships Agendas (daily) 1st 9 Weeks Conferences with every parent will be held in Oct. 5th ClassTag reminders and info as needed Email teachers directly as needed Parent Portal to check grades

  19. Schedule Tardy bell rings at 7:45 Breakfast will be in the classroom. Lunch 12:30 - 1:00 WIN Instruction 1:00-1:30 Recess daily 2:20-2:30 Car riders will load at 2:35. Car riders MUST have a tag visible on the visor or dash! Bus riders will load at 2:45. **Parents - for the safety of our students, please note that buses may not be changed by phone call or note except in extreme circumstances (i.e., need to send student to grandmother because parent will not be home). Please make contact regarding emergencies as soon as you can; only emergency situations will be permitted regarding bus changes.

  20. Class Rotation Students will be rotating to classes this year. All supplies will rotate with the students in their bookbag. Students will not be allowed to go back to homeroom or the previous class for materials or personal items. We will discuss this more in depth with the students during the first few weeks of school.

  21. PE Days Mrs. Jackson Wednesday, Friday Ms. DeLapp Tuesday, Thursday Mrs. Starr Monday, Thursday Mrs. Prather Tuesday, Friday Mrs. Johnson - Monday, Wednesday PLEASE WEAR TENNIS SHOES ON THESE DAYS! NO DRESSES ON PE DAYS!

  22. Lunch Rules Everyone receives FREE breakfast and lunch this year! Children cannot bring snacks to the lunchroom All drinks must be in a plastic container No soft drinks or energy drinks Water bottles are needed daily WATER ONLY! Water filling stations have been installed no water fountains. These will be available to re-fill their bottles. (Please make sure your child's name is on their bottle.) Cups will not be available. Water bottles are for sale in the office

  23. Important Information If you would like to meet with the teacher, please schedule a meeting IN ADVANCE. We will have an Honor s Day at the end of each 9 weeks via Zoom in our classroom to celebrate success of all types. Promotion and Retention Policy for 5th Grade is on Page 37 of the student handbook! Be sure you read over this!

  24. Activities Kona Ice will be sold monthly watch for the schedule in the weekly newsletters. 5th grade will conduct an end of year graduation ceremony in May 5th grade will have a field trip in May

  25. Medication Give to bus driver Give to nurse Medication should NEVER be in the possession of the student at any time!

  26. B.O.Y. Paperwork All beginning of the year paperwork will be sent home in a gallon size Ziploc bag with the student s number and homeroom on it. Please return ALL paperwork back to the homeroom teachers in the Ziploc bag. Return paperwork by August 8th Sign up for ClassTag app by August 8th
