  1. Management Scenarios

  2. Task: 1. Design 4 4 possible management scenarios a) Site-specific b) Activity specific c) Legislation specific d) Relevant to model

  3. Management Scenario Examples 1. Prohibitions by gear type e.g. closed areas for otter trawling Discussion could include: - What are the consequences of this? - Displacement of fishing effort? - Modification of gear type?

  4. Management Scenario Examples 2. Gear and fishing modifications Design and operation can be modified to reduce impact on seabed Typical bottom Trawl, image credit: SEAFISH

  5. Management Scenario Examples 3. Spatial/temporal controls Freezing a fishing footprint e.g. temporarily close an area Zoning Zoning creation of fishing zones Prohibitions by habitat type

  6. Management Scenario Examples 4. Effort controls Removal of effort leading to more effort elsewhere? What are the consequences?

  7. Similar outcomes Some management scenarios will be similar and lead to similar outcomes e.g. prohibition by gear type and spatial controls We can have multiple options within a single scenario e.g. focused displacement of fishing or cessation of fishing in closed area The focus will be on MPA-specific and activity-specific management scenarios

  8. Scenario packs for next session Information about the MPA Fishing activity maps Stakeholder discussion Site specific fishing activity maps (Swept Area Ratios) Relative Benthic Status maps and table Site-specific and focused management scenarios, which help meet conservation objectives
