  8. In 1794 the cordwainers, or leather shoemakers, established the first union in America. There was controversy regarding the legality of workers to organize themselves and make demands against their bosses and corporations. The issue went to trial with the union and the owners arguing about legality. 9

  9. Unions set back the shoemaking industry Unions threaten the entire economy of the city English common law forbids workers collusion in order to control the price of labor. Allowing the shoemakers union to exist would set an example for other trades that might foment hostilities, violence, and potential civil war. Unions are a menace to social stability and the public welfare. 10

  10. Workers had the right to organize and receive wages comparable to those of journeymen shoemakers in other big cities. Unions argued that English common law no longer applied to Pennsylvania Unions asserted that no law existed in Pennsylvania prohibited journeymen from organizing for wage increases. Owners' control over their laborers serves as a form of wage slavery, comparable to the tyranny American colonists had fought against. 11
