  1. GLOBALISATION Understanding the key concepts and terms used in this unit.

Definitions of globalisation might include reference to: interconnection/connection of different parts of the world greater geographical mobility movement of people, ideas, goods, services multiculturalism spread of different values, ideas and lifestyles greater awareness of global issues (e.g. deforestation) increasing role of technology in our lives internet and mobiles providing greater communication links to postmodernism transnational corporations and international trade McDonaldization.

  3. Why key terms/concepts are so important. Look at the questions below. They are jammed full of key terms so your understanding is essential. 1. With reference to the Sources, explain how social media might extend social networks. [9] 2. With reference to the Sources, explain how digital communication may impact on globalisation. [10] 3. Outline and assess the view that digital communication is leading to global cultural homogenisation. [10] Not much by way of theory so we need guess it in many places and use academic articles well.

Create a flash card which has the following headings: Key term: Explanation: Globalisation Globalisation is difficult to define as it has several key ideas underpinning it, namely it is a complex process that has a variety of social, economic and political factors, it occurs at different rates for different groups, can be positive and negative and has technology at its heart. Study and/example to support the explanation: The intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa. (Giddens, 1990) The emergence of a global economic and cultural system which is incorporating the people of the world into a single global society. (Cochrane and Pain, 2000). A series of transformations of the world, including changes in the concept of time and space, interdependent economies, increasing cultural interaction and increasingly shared problems. (Cohen and Kennedy, 2000).

  6. Create a flash card which has the following headings: Cultural transition: the idea that various aspects of people s culture or identity become increasingly important when they undergo a period of change, for example in moving from one place to another.
