KNOWING GODS REDEMPTIVE STORY THE WILDERNESS WANDERINGS: LOOK AND LIVE
THINK ABOUT THIS What does a life of blessing require of those who follow God?
Have you ever been given an assignment that turned into a mess? Share briefly about that experience. Discuss
1. GOD FULFILLED HIS PROMISE TO LEAD, PROTECT, AND PROVIDE FOR THE HEBREWS IN THE WILDERNESS.
EXODUS 23:20-25A I am going to send an angel before you to protect you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and listen to him. Do not defy him, because he will not forgive your acts of rebellion, for my name is in him. But if you will carefully obey him and do everything I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes.
EXODUS 23:20-25A For my angel will go before you and bring you to the land of the Amorites, Hethites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. Do not bow in worship to their gods, and do not serve them. Do not imitate their practices. Instead, demolish them and smash their sacred pillars to pieces. Serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water.
What stands out most about God s promise of His presence to Israel in Exodus 23:20-25a? Discuss
Why do you think it was so difficult for Israel to be delivered out of Egypt? How has receiving God's rescue and redemption in your life has been challenging? Discuss
DISCUSS What do you think about Nicolas Berdyaev's quote on slavery and freedom: Humanity is in a state of servitude. We frequently do not notice that we are slaves, and sometimes we love it. But humanity also aspires to be set free. It would be a mistake to think that the average person loves freedom. A still greater mistake would be to suppose that freedom is an easy thing. Freedom is a difficult thing.
2. GODS PEOPLE REPEATEDLY REBELLED BY REFUSING TO OBEY, RESULTING IN GOD S JUDGMENT.
NUMBERS 14:26-35 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: How long must I endure this evil community that keeps complaining about me? I have heard the Israelites complaints that they make against me. Tell them: As I live this is the Lord s declaration I will do to you exactly as I heard you say. Your corpses will fall in this wilderness all of you who were registered in the census, the entire number of you twenty years old or more because you have complained about me.
NUMBERS 14:26-35 I swear that none of you will enter the land I promised to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. I will bring your children whom you said would become plunder into the land you rejected, and they will enjoy it. But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years and bear the penalty for your acts of unfaithfulness until all your corpses lie scattered
NUMBERS 14:26-35 in the wilderness. You will bear the consequences of your iniquities forty years based on the number of the forty days that you scouted the land, a year for each day. You will know my displeasure. I, the Lord, have spoken. I swear that I will do this to the entire evil community that has conspired against me. They will come to an end in the wilderness, and there they will die.
Why do you think God is so serious about the complaints Israel makes about Him? Discuss
Typically, the American way is to avoid hardship and suffering and seek relief at any cost. How have you experienced this or seen this? Discuss
How does Gods mercy in the judgment described in Numbers 14 give you hope? Discuss
3. GOD ALONE PROVIDES SALVATION THE BRONZE SERPENT.
NUMBERS 21:6-9 Then the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people, and they bit them so that many Israelites died. The people then came to Moses and said, We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Intercede with the Lord so that he will take the snakes away from us. And Moses interceded for the people.
NUMBERS 21:6-9 Then the Lord said to Moses, Make a snake image and mount it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will recover. So, Moses made a bronze snake and mounted it on a pole. Whenever someone was bitten, and he looked at the bronze snake, he recovered.
WADJET, EGYPTIAN COBRA GODDESS
JOHN 3:14-18 EXPLAINS WHAT HAPPENED IN NUMBERS 14 AS A SHADOW OF CHRIST: Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
JOHN 3:14-18 EXPLAINS WHAT HAPPENED IN NUMBERS 14 AS A SHADOW OF CHRIST: For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.
GOSPEL FOCUS Jesus is the only solution for the spiritual issues of life and our greatest need for salvation from our sin.
WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT THE SERPENT SYMBOLISM AND BIBLICAL REFERENCES? Reflect
