What is the NYSESLAT It is designed to annually assess the English Language Proficiency of all English Language Learners The NYSESLAT Measures five performance levels. These performance levels reflect how an ELL has progressed along the continuum of English Language Acquisition. The five performance levels are Entering, Emerging, Transitioning, Expanding, and Commanding.

Kindly ask your school administrator to print a copy for each teacher administering the test. Read it thoroughly prior to administering the NYSESLAT
Estimated Testing Times Please adhere to these estimated times for planning your scheduling. This will allow you to plan to return to your instructional time with your students.
Nassau BOCES Class Rosters and Answer Sheets Nassau BOCES will send them to the Bilingual and World Language Department in the next few weeks. Facilities will deliver them to the schools, and at each school, there will be a designated person to sign for them. Please maintain the answer sheets in a secure location at ALL times. As soon as you review all the answer sheets, please contact the Bilingual Department for any pre-printed answer sheets that may be missing.
Inventory Test Materials Shipment 1: Speaking Session Materials Delivered March 27 through Monday, April 3, 2023 Shipment 2: Listening, Reading, and Writing Materials Delivered Monday, May 8ththrough May 12, 2023 Shipment 3: Writing Scoring Materials Delivered Tuesday, May 23 through Friday, May 26, 2023
Test Security Sealed packages must be in a secure location An inventory should be conducted as soon as the boxes arrive to make sure enough quantities are available Pearson s Customer Support: 888-705- 9415 Materials should not be removed until the day the test is administered The location of the secure materials must be documented at all times
Testing Accommodations English Language Learners Teacher Reading to Student Students who Incur Disabilities Shortly Before the Test Administration Use of a Scribe Large Type or Braille Editions Students with an IEP or 504 Plan
Speaking Section **The Speaking test must be scored by a teacher who is no the student s teacher of English as a New Language, Bilingual Education or English Language Arts** Have copies of the Speaking Score Sheet for Individual Administration(Appendix D) with the student labels ready Familiarize yourself with the Directions For Administration, procedures and scoring rubrics The scorer must use a Speaking Score Sheet for each student
Listening/Reading/Writing Section Please have a CD Player/Audio ready PRIOR to starting the test. Also, know the track number on the CD for the start of each of the sessions. Each session, starts on a different track. All students must use a #2 Pencil and individual privacy dividers. Make sure to read the statement on page 20 of the SAM with students before starting the test. It speaks on NOT having any communication devices. Place LABELS on the back of the booklets. (Grades K only on the Writing Booklets)
Scoring: Writing We will NOT score the writing portion within our district. OSC Service will complete it We will provide further clarification to ENL Department Liaisons on the packing of the booklets A team will be asked to conduct the troubleshooting before we send the tests for scoring. The Bilingual Department will send boxes to store, and secure tests at all times
