Strategy discussion Current situation: independent next gen work in each group, bottoms up driven. Possible improvement: coordinate future looking (5+ year out) activities - Share 802 s next gen activities at joint session Wed 03 November 2021 - Look for opportunities to coordinate next gen work across groups - Consider establishing a joint 802 next gen meeting each plenary session - Potential non-traditional 802 participants: - Encourage researchers to share advanced technologies, networking concepts and applications that may eventually be incorporated into 802 projects - Academics, Researchers, Corporate Strategic Planners, etc. 4
802 Next Gen Coordination/Brainstorm Workshop Goals: a) Provide a platform for 802 groups to exchange information on their next gen activities b) Provide an 802-wide platform for developers of early-stage technologies (e.g., academic and industrial researchers), to introduce the technologies to the 802 community well before they may be ready for incorporation into an 802 technical standards project. Outcomes: a) Ensure the wider 802 community is familiar with 802 next gen activities b) Educate researchers on the 802 process, introduce them to the 802 community and enable them to make their research more relevant to the interests of the 802 community. Ideally, some of these early-stage technologies will eventually be incorporated in to a relevant 802 standard project. Next Steps: Depending on the outcome/feedback from this workshop, to consider holding similar workshops (once suggestion is to call it an 802 symposium) on a regular basis, perhaps annually prior to the November plenary sessions. 5
Workshop Tentative Agenda a) leader of each 802 next gen group present 5-10 minutes on their activities: - Roger Marks on 802.1/Nendica, - Jon Lewis on 802.3/New Ethernet Applications, - Jim Lansford on 802.11/WNG, - Ben Rolfe on 802.15/WNG and - Tim Godfrey on 802.24 VNA b) spend 10-15 minutes exploring collaborative next-gen opportunities across 802 c) brainstorm with 802 participants and researchers on new next gen topics d) organize next steps to continue next gen 802 work 6
Potential Brainstorm Topics Paul: Convergence wired/wireless/unlicensed/licensed packet data networks when and how? Spectrum sharing, Machine Learning PHY enhancements, Network Infrastructure Energy Efficiency, Quantum Communication, Human/Machine Communication Interface Dorothy: Full Duplex, AI, IoT, Terahertz, Machine Learning, WLAN evolution, mmWave Beamforming, private dedicated spectrum networks, coexistence techniques/evolution Ben: Coexistence leverage learning techniques, challenges of hybrid wless operation, intelligent channel access Tim: High reliability wless, shortage of spectrum, dynamic spectrum, explore leveraging licensed spectrum, coordination of wired and wireless technology for integration Roger: Cut Through Forwarding, TSN coordinating links is a challenge for wless, e.g. 802.11 represents an opportunity for coordination/management/scheduled/facility control Jim: Unlicensed QoS/QoE challenges George: Return to half-duplex for CSMA/CD networks, automation applications for 802.3 802.1, 802.3, 802.15, 802.18, 802.19, 802.24 need additional input from chairs
b) Date and Time of monthly ad hoc calls 13:00-14:00 ET (17:00-18:00 UTC) 3rd Tuesday of each month Next meeting 13:00-14:00 ET Tuesday 16 November 2021 c) Action item review, draft agenda for next meeting (~5 min) d) Adjourn 8
Current future looking activities IEEE 802 Network Enhancements for the Next Decade Industry Connections Activity (NENDICA) The goal of this activity is to assess, outside of the IMT activity, emerging requirements for IEEE 802 wireless and higher-layer communication infrastructures, identify commonalities, gaps, and trends not currently addressed by IEEE 802 standards and projects, and facilitate building industry consensus towards proposals to initiate new standards development efforts IEEE 802 New Ethernet Applications (NEA) The goal of this activity is to assess requirements for new Ethernet-based applications, identify gaps not currently addressed by IEEE 802.3 standards, and facilitate building industry consensus towards proposals to initiate new standards development efforts
Current future looking activities IEEE 802.11 Wireless Next Generation Scope: need input from chair IEEE 802.15 Wireless Next Generation Scope: need input from chair IEEE 802.18, 802.19, 802.24 need input from chairs
802 restructuring ad hoc -- background Restructuring objective increase efficiency and responsiveness of 802 LMSC Consider more autonomy for WGs and TAGs, while maintaining 802 brand identity, high quality standards and cross group collaboration/coordination Possibly re-charter the 802 Executive Committee Focus on long term growth, fostering new work, high level interactions with external organizations and public visibility. Next Steps Ongoing discussions at 1 hour monthly meetings, report out status each plenary Deliverable: a well vetted and socialized recommendation for EC consideration within 12 months. 12
