  7. Three examples 1. Connecting people for strategic engagement 2. Transforming eye health using our Sight loss data tool 3. Promoting independence by applying Ten principles of good practice in vision rehabilitation 7

  8. Example 1: Connecting people for strategic engagement Working age panel implementation: Worked with Digital Services to improve our website. Helped design telephone support groups for people of working age. Been at the heart of our response to the Government s recent Green Paper on employment Supported Human Resources to design a peer mentoring service advised RNIB Trustees on steps for RNIB to employ more blind and partially sighted people. Co-authored : Guide for working with blind and partially sighted colleagues . Learning - face to face is not sustainable; let's be creative 8

  9. Example 2: Transforming eye health with sight loss data RNIB Sight loss data tool is an MS Excel tool which holds and reports on a range of sight loss/eye health indicators People use it to strengthen their evidence base or add to their expert local knowledge. Useful for influencing service delivery, eye health commissioning, campaigning and fundraising. 9

  10. Sight Loss Data Tool - Reports You can select a local area for a tailored report of all indicators for the area 10

  11. Sight Loss Data Tool - tailored report Scroll down for more details 11

  12. Sight loss data tool - example data set Ophthalmology Eye clinic appointments 12

  13. Implementation - securing eye health services By using the tool I demonstrated the huge increase in ophthalmology appointments at my London Hospital in the past 3 years. This 267% increase helped me justify the need to keep the existing hospital sight loss advice service that was under threat of closure". By using the demographic data I showed that the high proportion of residents from BME communities would increase the incidence of particular eye conditions . Learning: need for ongoing training and support 13

  14. Example 3: Promoting Independence - Ten Principles of Good Practice in Vision Rehabilitation Asked: What does good vision rehab look like? Best available evidence Reviewed existing evidence Extensive consultation with over 130 practitioners and blind and partially sighted people Co-produced Ten Principles People and practitioner input Judgement 14

  15. Ten Principles of good practice in vision rehabilitation - implementation Blind and partially sighted people equiped as spokespeople Visiting local councils as they make funding decisions Using the Ten prinicples to help local councils understand the vision rehab service they expect Learning Additional resource needed to gain support from the wide range of stakeholder organisations engaged in supporting visually impaired people prior to publication. Major challenges remain as we seek to persuade funders. 15
