What is ACSEM Primary advisory body to the Academic Senate https://www.csulb.edu/academic-senate/advisory-council-strategic-enrollment- management Established in Spring 2020; First year: 2020-2021 review, evaluate, set priorities where appropriate, and make recommendations on strategic enrollment matters Examples: strategic recruitment, optimal enrollments, admissions policies

Increase yield rates Increase applications and yields of focus groups How can we improve the recruitment and retention of African American/Black Students at CSULB? Unified and collective efforts across campus Improve campus climate for African American/Black Students

Increase peer mentoring and advising for Black students, as well as unifying and utilizing current mentoring programs and initiatives across campus Each student with a mentor Targeted advising by race (e.g, thru EAB) Advising Equity Roundtables Faculty advisors to be included Support from colleges to include a rep Students to be included

  11. Increase community outreach efforts within the local Long Beach area that focus on Black students, families, and community organizations Continue University Access and Retention Focused campaigns to communities of Black students Connect with admitted Black students (to increase yield) Scholarships Research other practices (HBCU s)

  12. Focus on the financial aid of Black students, including University debt forgiveness, examining the impact of financial aid packages and gap- in-aid on student retention by race/ethnicity Data sharing across campus data systems Financial aid, enrollment, Study gaps in financial aid Impacts on retention and graduation

  13. Develop and implement freshman programs focusing on Black student sense of belonging, racial pride/affirmation, networking, and academic skill-building Increase sense of belonging Active and separate programs (e.g., orientation) Freshmen programs (mentoring, a cultural course, academic skills) specific to Black students Connect Black students to Black alumni, faculty
