  3. FINDING AN INTERNSHIP THAT MEETS COURSE REQUIREMENTS First, you have skills and talent. Do NOT forget that. Second, you are in one of the world s largest media markets! Internships that qualify for JOUR 498 criteria are abundant. Third, start NOW to find an internship! Application deadlines for most spring internships are fast approaching! Apply to many, many internships. Follow up. Don t let rejection affect you. See Career Development Center for free help with your cover letter and resume. Make them great!

  4. REQUIREMENTS Types of Internships Freshman Level exposure to field Sophomore-Junior Level exposure to field and some skill development Senior Level focused on skill development JOUR 498 is senior-level course. Find internship focusing on skill development.

  5. SKILL DEVELOPMENT What is skill development? Writing, editing, photography, design and layout, multimedia production Work you can display in your portfolio and show potential employer Specific JOUR 498 requirements 100 internship hours throughout enrolled semester Can I do more hours? Of course. Your internship may involve much more than JOUR 498 requires. And may involve many more hours than JOUR 498 requires.

REQUIREMENTS CONTINUED Work must be related to journalism or public relations Journalism Media organizations = TV stations, news networks, sports networks, newspapers, magazines, news radio Usually reporting, assisting reporters, production editing, writing, editing, covering stories, working assignment desk

  7. PUBLIC RELATIONS OR COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIPS Public Relations Companies, nonprofits, public relations agencies Writing stories for newsletters, press releases, fact sheets, biographies, backgrounders, blogs, and social media; designing collateral materials such as brochures, newsletters, fliers, and social media posts; creating multimedia for social media and websites JPR students can do either a journalism or public relations/communications/marketing communications internship.

  8. YOUR SITE SUPERVISOR One Last Important Thing Your site supervisor is your mentor and teacher. Must be seasoned professional, meaning lots of years of professional experience in the field Hopefully with five years of managerial experience on top of being a seasoned professional Cannot be someone who just graduated a few years ago with a BA or BS. So you must provide background on your site supervisor.

  9. INTERNSHIP MUST BE SCREENED FOR J498 APPROVAL How do I screen your internship sites to ensure you have the potential of earning three units of academic credit for JOUR 498? You complete application found on JPR Internship website. Vital information about site (type of organization, location, etc.) Skill-development tasks you ll be doing (writing, editing, design, etc.) Background on your site supervisor (past employment, educational degrees, etc. = usually found on LinkedIn)

  10. HOW DO I FIND AN INTERNSHIP? First, where do you want to work when you graduate? You are skilled at finding information. Use your skills. JPR site CDC site CLA site Critiques Excel listing

  12. JOUR 498 IS A REAL COURSE! If you are not serious about this course, do NOT take it. You represent not only yourself but JPR and CSULB. You must complete and submit numerous assignments on JOUR 498 BeachBoard site by assigned deadlines during the spring semester. You must read materials and study learning modules posted in content section of JOUR 498 BeachBoard site. Again, do NOT take JOUR 498 if you cannot devote time, energy or attention to it. Save JOUR 498 for another semester.
