  1. The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. Amos 1:1

  2. Looming judgment, but future hope The Day of the Lord or that day : a period of time in history when God intervenes in human affairs in a clear, powerful, and decisive way, calling people to account for their actions, bringing judgment for some and salvation for others

  3. 18Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! Why would you have the day of the LORD? It is darkness, and not light,19as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him. 20Is not the day of the LORD darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it? Amos 5:18-20

  4. Key Old Testament Covenants God s covenant with Abraham (Genesis 12:1-7, 15:1-21) God s covenant with the people of Israel at Sinai (Ex. 19:5-6) God s covenant with David (2 Samuel 7:11-17)

  5. Covenant Disobedience: Worship of False Gods 26You shall take up Sikkuth your king, and Kiyyun your star- god your images that you made for yourselves,27and I will send you into exile beyond Damascus, says the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts. (Amos 5:26-27)

  6. Covenant Disobedience: Focus on Worldly Pleasures 4 Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall, 5who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for themselves instruments of music, 6who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! (Amos 6:4- 6)

  7. Covenant Disobedience: Oppression of Poor Brothers The wealthy and powerful in Israel: sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth and turn aside the way of the afflicted (Amos 2:6-7) They oppress the poor and crush the needy (Amos 4:1) They impose taxes on poor (Amos 5:11) They take bribes and afflict the righteous (Amos 5:12)

  8. Covenant Disobedience 21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. 22Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. 23Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. 24But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. (Amos 5:21-24)

  9. Covenant Curse Deuteronomy 28 is key

  10. Covenant Curse I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places, yet you did not return to me I also withheld the rain yet you did not return to me I struck you with blight and mildew yet you did not return to me I sent among you a pestilence after the manner of Egypt yet you did not return to me I overthrew some of you, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah yet you did not return to me (Amos 4:6-11)

  11. Covenant Curse For behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, declares the LORD, the God of hosts; and they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah. (Amos 6:14) Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land. (Amos 7:11)

  12. Hope through Judgment 11 In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, 12that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name, declares the Lord who does this. (Amos 9:11-12)

  13. All of Gods promises find their Yes and Amen in Jesus (1 Cor. 1:20) He is the Child of Abraham who blesses all the nations of the earth with God s grace and mercy He is the Holy and Faithful Israelite who perfectly obeys God s covenant Law He is the Seed of David whose Kingdom is established forever He is the Guarantor of a New and Better Covenant

  14. Jesuss ministry on earth began as a life-changing, reality-altering Day of the Lord Jesus s ministry on earth will end as a life-changing, reality-altering Day of the Lord
